Last year, audiences were astonished by Grace Mak’s hyper-realistic paintings of Hong Kong dollars. These paintings were so lifelike that they even prompted a police investigation into the suspicion of counterfeit currency, causing a sensation in the art world. To further explore this form of artistic expression, Touch Gallery specially organised the second season of the “True to Form” exhibition this year, inviting seven artists to participate, each reinterpreting realism in their unique ways.

Why it matters:
The seven artists reinterpret realism through different approaches, profoundly exploring the significance of realistic art and their unique modes of expression: Akifumi Okumura explores the relationship between humans and animals, reflecting the microcosm of human society. Chak Hung Wong combines magazine covers, clothing, and animal imagery, prompting viewers to think about their circumstances. Steven Tang’s realistic food artworks seem to endow food with a soul, with lively and lifelike details. Grace Mak’s realistic paintings and installation art prompt viewers to think about the self in society. Ka Yan Mak depicts the tangible Goldfish Street, becoming a window into the inner world. Shue Fung Tang uses his brush to record the characters around him, presenting a portrait of this era. Siu Him Liu uses Hong Kong stories and legends as creative material, depicting fictional yet visually striking toys and scenes.
3 Highlights:

These works not only carry local color but also showcase universal imagination and creativity. This is a deep exploration by the artists into realism, challenging the audience’s understanding of the subtle relationships between reality and fiction, appearance and essence. It offers an opportunity to ponder and explore the boundaries between art and reality. As the exhibition opens, the public’s reaction will undoubtedly become an integral part of this artistic feast.
