A halo, a symbol of holiness, traditionally depicted as a circular or arched manifestation of light encircling the head of a revered figure. However, in the upcoming solo exhibition “The Twist of a Halo” by Hong Kong artist Kazy Chan, this symbol is reinterpreted. By challenging the fixed preconceptions that often stifle our creativity and understanding, Kazy distorts and reimagines this ethereal symbol through various mediums in hopes that viewers can reflect on the ever-changing nature of their perceptions and knowledge of the world.

Why it matters?
As depicted by a myriad of artists, halos are products of imagination, and their true form remains unknown, allowing for endless interpretations ranging from a simple representation of radiance in the form of a circle to evolving into a symbol of the Trinity in the shape of a cross. In Kazy’s works, these halos are not just convergences of light but also showcase the artist’s pursuit of creative freedom. Each piece embodies his relentless pursuit of innovation and exploration across different mediums.
This exhibition will showcase Kazy’s works, including his largest ceramic sculptures, never-seen-before paintings on wood in halo-shaped frames, and his innovative ceramic-on-canvas pieces. He uses twisted wooden frames for the first time, displaying a series of paintings within halo-shaped frames. In recent years, Kazy has continuously broken the boundaries of artistic expression by merging ceramic sculptures with canvas, breaking away from the traditional confines of flat paintings to create a new art form that combines two-dimensional and three-dimensional elements.

3 Highlights:
- Kazy’s ceramic works are the focal point of this exhibition, with a conceptual focus on the meaning of halos rather than their physical representation. Particularly noteworthy is the piece ‘The Chair,’ which presents in an ergonomically designed chair shape, challenging traditional perceptions of comfortable seating. As viewers approach, they discover a halo, typically suspended above the heads of sacred figures, neglected and drooping over the chair, carrying an unusual weight for this iconic image.

- Through Kazy’s descriptions, familiar halos and objects become increasingly elusive. Like in the exhibition’s largest painting ‘The Halo,’ the depicted halo is larger than traditionally perceived, like a planet expanding in the vast universe, with specks of stars symbolizing more individuals joining, perhaps forming a new, ever-expanding ring of stars, becoming part of the universe.

- The exhibition’s lighting and spatial layout are also inspired by halos, creating a series of oddly shaped doorways that guide viewers through the various corners of the gallery. Through these distorted and peculiar designs, viewers are encouraged to actively explore this constantly changing world, challenging and reshaping established notions, bringing us closer to our most authentic inner selves at every turn.
