“State of Mind: Li Xiaoxuan’s Tradition and Contemporary” is a forward-looking exhibition of contemporary calligraphy and painting by Chinese artist Li Xiaoxuan. • New Expressionism is a development and extension of Abstract Expressionism, emphasizing the artist’s subjective emotional expression through bold colours and lines that convey dynamism and texture. Li Xiaoxuan is a prominent representative of contemporary Chinese New Expressionist ink art. His creation has evolved from objective realism to symbolism, emphasizing lyrical introspection and bridging traditional brushwork language with real life. His portraits reflect a deep introspection into human nature, showcasing a unique psychological orientation.

Background — Li Xiaoxuan

1959年4月17日生於天津市漢沽區；1982年畢業於天津美術學院中國畫系，分配到天津塘沽區圖書館工作；1985年調入天津美術學院中國畫系任教至今。2011年任中國國家畫院研究員，任天津美術學院中國畫系系主任。現任天津美術學院中國畫系教授，寫意人物畫工作室主任，研究生導師，中國美術協會會員，天津美院國畫學院院長。同時作品被韓國現代美術館，澳門市政廳，新加坡斯民藝苑，台灣長江藝術中心，美國明德大學，香港藝術館，廣州美術館，廣東美術館，深圳美術館，深圳畫院，中國畫研究院等機構和個人收藏。

Born on April 17, 1959, in Tanggu District, Tianjin, graduated in 1982 from the Chinese Painting Department of Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts and worked at the Tanggu District Library in Tianjin. In 1985, he joined the faculty of the Chinese Painting Department at Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, where he remains today. He has been a researcher at the National Academy of Chinese Painting since 2011. Currently, he serves as a professor and head of the Freehand Figure Painting Studio, graduate supervisor, Chinese Artists Association member, and Chinese Painting Institute dean at Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts. His works are collected by institutions and individuals, including the Museum of Modern Art, Korea; Civic Hall, Macau; Smin Art Garden, Singapore; Changjiang Arts Center, Taiwan; Mind University, USA; Hong Kong Art Museum; Guangzhou Art Museum; Guangdong Art Museum; Shenzhen Art Museum; Shenzhen Painting Academy; and the Chinese Painting Research Institute.
