Zhu Chenwei, born in Taiwan in 2000, is a rising star in contemporary art. After graduating from the Department of Fine Arts at National Kaohsiung Normal University, he quickly made a name for himself in the art community. He became one of the youngest exhibitors at the Taipei Contemporary Art Fair and is recognised as an important figure in the future of Asia’s art market.

Zhu Chenwei’s creations primarily utilise acrylic paints. He employs a technique of broad flat brushing, using minimal layers to preserve the natural texture of the canvas. In his paintings, he introduces misaligned lines that spill out of the composition, initially used to disrupt the original structure of the paintings but recently transformed into elements that enhance the colours. Zhu’s works combine blocks of colour, brushstrokes, and layered lines, using fragmented pigments, visually evoking the atmosphere of 1960s pop art.

His creative inspiration stems from the backdrop of the information explosion in the 21st century, which instils in him a sense of cultural disorientation. Zhu Chenwei sees himself as a “middleman” or “nomad,” searching for his identity between the established cultural heritage and the shocks of new cultural impacts. Additionally, Zhu Chenwei has a profound fondness for science fiction movies and series, from “Back to the Future” to “Stranger Things” and “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” with their rich visual effects sparking limitless creativity and contemplation in him.

在他的作品中,朱晨維會向藝術大師致敬,如向Damien Hirst的《The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living》表達敬意,或是透過《白堊紀》系列探討不同文化對「龍」的象徵意義。
In his works, Zhu Chenwei also pays homage to art masters, such as expressing reverence for Damien Hirst’s “The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living” or exploring the different cultural symbolisms of “dragons” in the “Cretaceous” series. His artworks create dialogues between Eastern and Western values, showcasing cultural diversity and innovatively demonstrating cross-cultural communication and understanding. Among these, the “Bacchus Series” centres on the figure of Bacchus, weaving through different eras and classic paintings, intertwined with pop elements, creating a visual feast of intermingling times and spaces, closely linking art with contemporary life and prompting viewers to reflect on the role and significance of art in an ever-changing world.

For Zhu Chenwei, creation is a process of sharing his genuine feelings. “In creating, I believe good works are about sharing one’s most sincere feelings. However, I must admit that my thoughts often leap irrationally and lack any logical order. I find this state thrilling because it allows me to escape rationality and see different aspects of myself. Sometimes, I’m surprised by the inspirations, which is pretty cool. If everything, every work needed a reason, that would be too serious, and I don’t like that.” Perhaps not every piece needs a grand concept behind it; Zhu Chenwei is tired of solemn creative modes. Thus, his works maintain a sense of freedom and spontaneity, making them more relatable to everyday life.
