Last year, audiences were astonished by Grace Mak’s hyper-realistic paintings of Hong Kong dollars. “State of Mind: Li Xiaoxuan’s Tradition and Contemporary” is a forward-looking exhibition of contemporary calligraphy and painting by Chinese artist Li Xiaoxuan. The exhibition covers selected masterpieces from various periods of the artist’s career, from traditional to modern, from portraits to landscapes. Li Xiaoxuan redefines and reinterprets the established image of Chinese calligraphy and painting with robust and vigorous rough ink lines and delicate gradations of shading, boldly merging Western modernism with traditional ink painting.
