TREASURES OF THE MUGHAL COURT transports you to South Asia from 1560 to 1660, a century of unparalleled splendor under the Mughal dynasty. During this golden era, one of the world’s wealthiest and most powerful empires, ruled by the legendary emperors Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan, gave rise to a dazzling array of courtly art that fused diverse cultural influences.

This exhibition showcases nearly 100 exquisite artifacts from the Victoria and Albert Museum, illuminating how Mughal art radiated brilliance through the interplay of South Asian, Chinese, Iranian, and European traditions.

Founded by Emperor Babur, the Mughal Empire, with Persian as its official language, blended Islamic and South Asian cultures to create a distinctive artistic legacy. The exhibition highlights the contributions of three emperors:

Emperor Akbar pioneered an inclusive artistic vision, introducing the kundan technique, which melded pure gold foil with gemstones to craft opulent ceremonial objects, such as intricately carved Iranian-patterned long-handled vessels and enamel-filled thumb rings, symbols of imperial grandeur.

Emperor Jahangir, a lover of nature and travel, commissioned court artists to capture the beauty of flora and fauna, blending European botanical illustrations to create exquisite hand-painted borders and architectural motifs. A deep pink spinel in the exhibition, inscribed with the names of Jahangir and Timurid ruler Ulugh Beg, bears witness to cultural exchanges with Iran’s Safavid dynasty.

Emperor Shah Jahan, renowned for the Taj Mahal—a timeless tribute to his empress Mumtaz Mahal—elevated Mughal architecture to its zenith. During his reign, marble inlay techniques in Agra reached new heights, with artisans using black marble, red carnelian, and lapis lazuli to carve floral and vine patterns on white marble, crafting breathtaking decorative art.

Among the exhibits, a crystal cup stands as a pinnacle of craftsmanship. Its outer surface is adorned with curved gold wires encrusted with rubies, emeralds, and blue glass, while its inner wall conceals a miniature portrait evoking the “full-moon face” of Persian poetry, accented by the iridescent blue-green sheen of kingfisher feathers. These masterpieces not only showcase the mastery of kundan techniques but also weave together Iranian motifs, European enameling, and South Asian aesthetics, embodying the eclectic splendor of Mughal court art.
