當你第一眼看到插畫家卓霈欣的插畫作品，你會被她作品中細膩且溫柔的視覺語言、生動而強烈的情緒表達所打動。卓霈欣國小時就開始學畫，從台北藝術大學動畫系到英國皇家藝術學院視覺傳達與插畫系，再到出版繪本《漁夫和他的靈魂》，她的作品一直獨樹一幟，圍繞著情緒展開，著重敘事，催化觀者的記憶共鳴。

Upon first glance at the illustrations of artist Pei-Hsin Cho, you’ll be deeply moved by the delicate and gentle visual language and the vibrant yet potent emotional expressions within her works. Pei Hsin is a London-based visual storyteller from Taiwan, specializing in illustration and animation, she began her artistic journey in elementary school, studying animation at Taipei National University of the Arts, followed by visual communication and illustration at the Royal College of Art in the UK. With the publication of her picture book “The Fisherman and His Soul,” her work continues to stand out. Blending traditional and digital techniques, Pei Hsin weaves elaborate visual language and textures to transcribe the subtleties of human emotion into ethereal and atmospheric imagery.

她精緻、感傷、空靈的插畫，受到古典繪畫尤其是文藝復興時期作品的啓發。“我總是被這些簡單的手勢如何傳遞如此多的情感所吸引”。多年累積的扎實美術底子讓她在形體的捕捉和光影的運用上相當靈活且細緻，而從動畫中學習的敘事技巧及空間的運用與轉化，也為她的插畫增添豐富的故事性。

Her exquisitely detailed, sentimental, and ethereal illustrations are inspired by classical art, particularly works from the Renaissance period. “I’m always captivated by how these simple gestures can convey such profound emotions,” she says. Years of accumulated solid art foundation have made her extremely flexible and meticulous in capturing form and manipulating light and shadow. Furthermore, her narrative skills and the utilization and transformation of space learned from animation add rich storytelling elements to her illustrations.

卓霈欣的創作靈感來自於她對自身經歷和自我關係的探索及內省，尤其有關人與人的互動。她筆下的人物或動物都擁有自己的性格和故事，“對我來說，我在個人創作的時候它就是我自己，就是生活和心情——關於個人的轉換跟抒發” 。在她的童年時期，情緒很少被表達。漸漸地，她找到一個適合處理情緒的工具——繪畫，借此來填補情感語言中的空缺，畫下一個內向害羞的人日常經歷的情緒消耗。 “我覺得畫本身不全然是一個訊息的傳遞者，而是引導者，引導觀者感受到屬於他們的情緒方向” 。

Pei-Hsin’ s creative inspiration stems from her exploration and introspection of personal experiences and self-relationships, particularly in terms of human interaction. The characters or animals in her works all possess their own personalities and stories, “For me, when I’m creating personally, it is myself – it’s about life and feelings – about personal transformation and expression.” During her childhood, emotions were seldom expressed. Gradually, she found an appropriate tool to handle emotions – painting, filling the void in emotional language, illustrating the emotional toll of an introverted and shy person’s daily experiences. “I believe that art is not solely a messenger, but a guide, leading viewers to feel their own emotional direction.”

例如在動畫作品《ego》中，女孩梳頭髮的場景，在她看來，強烈表達了自我轉變的內涵。人都會在某個時刻偶然察覺到自己的轉變，就像偶然掉了的幾根頭髮，意味著性格的一部分內核已離你而去，昨日的你已不是你，在漫長的歲月中每個人都不自覺地經歷了成長。

In her animation “Ego,” for example, the scene of a girl combing her hair, in her view, powerfully conveys the essence of self-transformation. Everyone will at some point become aware of their own change, just like the occasional few strands of hair that fall out, symbolizing that a part of your character’s core has departed from you. The you of yesterday is no longer you, and everyone unconsciously experiences growth over time.

在獲得2021波隆那SM國際插畫家大獎的《樹冠羞避》系列中，她描繪了不同樹種共生的適應性行為，以溝狀開口互不遮擋。在疫情封鎖期間，植物蔥鬱的景象帶來了希望和安慰，她體會到保持安全距離，讓萬物得以繁榮共存，一直存在於自然定律中。反觀在乎距離感的自己，也更能自洽。

In her series “Crown Shyness,” which won the 2021 Bologna SM International Illustrator Award, she depicts the adaptive behavior of different tree species coexisting without overshadowing each other through trench-like openings. During the pandemic lockdown, the lush scene of plants brought hope and comfort, and she realized the principle of keeping a safe distance to allow all things to coexist prosperously, always exists in nature’s law. Reflecting on her own sense of distance, she could be more consistent.

她在歐洲插畫產業主動出擊，憑借獨特作品，接下了許多商業插畫的工作，用插畫的角度重新詮釋文字。她最新的繪本，靈感來自於奧斯卡·王爾德的《漁夫和他的靈魂》，年輕的漁夫愛上了人魚，並為了與愛人生活在一起而捨棄了靈魂。

創作之初，她將圖像語言和文字語言互補，結合閱讀故事時的情緒，將繪本進行改編，反問觀眾，同樣身而為人，我們如何看待愛、身體和靈魂的關係呢？

She actively ventured into the European illustration industry and took on many commercial illustration jobs with her unique works, reinterpreting text from an illustrator’s perspective. Her latest picture book, inspired by Oscar Wilde’s “The Fisherman and His Soul,” tells the story of a young fisherman who falls in love with a mermaid and gives up his soul to live with his beloved.

At the beginning of her creation, she juxtaposed visual and textual language, combined the emotions of reading the story, and adapted the picture book, asking the audience how we, as human beings, view the relationship between love, body, and soul?
