“This collection of Gandharan sculpture is perhaps the most important privately owned group of Gandharan art ever to have been assembled,’ says Tristan Bruck, specialist in Asian art at Christie’s in New York. On 23 September 2020, Christie’s organized an auction featuring Gandharan Masterpieces from a Private Japanese Collection. This remarkable collection brilliantly showcases the confluence of cultures and religious ideas that blossomed in the ancient region of Gandhara. It even displays a rare and magnificent gray schist triad of Buddha Shakyamuni with bodhisattvas, one of the most important Gandharan sculpture to come to market. As a result, the total proceedings have successfully reached up to USD 13,878,750.

On 10 and 11 July, Christie’s Hong Kong held three auctions – Modern and Contemporary Art Evening Sale, Modern and Contemporary Art Day sale, as well as hosting the first leg of the ONE sale. Works sold in Hong Kong across the two days of sales realised a total of HK$967,864,000 / US$125,487,890. 10 Artist Auction Records were made, including Takeo Yamaguchi, George Condo, Javier Calleja, Chen Ke, Huang Yuxing, Luong Xuan Nhi, Hajime Sorayama, Park Re Hyun, Haegue Yang and Leif Ritchey.
