“This collection of Gandharan sculpture is perhaps the most important privately owned group of Gandharan art ever to have been assembled,’ says Tristan Bruck, specialist in Asian art at Christie’s in New York. On 23 September 2020, Christie’s organized an auction featuring Gandharan Masterpieces from a Private Japanese Collection. This remarkable collection brilliantly showcases the confluence of cultures and religious ideas that blossomed in the ancient region of Gandhara. It even displays a rare and magnificent gray schist triad of Buddha Shakyamuni with bodhisattvas, one of the most important Gandharan sculpture to come to market. As a result, the total proceedings have successfully reached up to USD 13,878,750.

Strategically located along the Silk Road trade routes linking South Asia, China and the Mediterranean, the ancient region of Gandhara — which straddled the Khyber Pass in what now spans eastern Afghanistan and northwestern Pakistan — was an important centre of culture, commerce and early Buddhist art. ‘Each culture imparted its own religious and cultural traditions on the region,’ says Bruck. ‘Other sources of inspiration were also introduced through the great volume of trade that passed through the area.’ HK ARTION has now shared with you 10 selected masterpieces from the auction!
