DESIRE IN INK: ZHU XINJIAN BETWEEN EXPRESSIONISM AND LITERATI PAINTING

Must literati painting always embody lofty refinement, depicting landscapes, flowers and birds for personal feelings? Zhu Xinjian, on the contrary, collides traditional ink painting with Western expressionism, allowing female desire, life scenes, and daily life to enter the language of ink and brush, breaking people’s preconceived imagination about traditional ink painting and showing a freer contemporary ideology to “new literati painting”.

WHY IT MATTERS

Lucie Chang Fine Arts

Lucie Chang Fine Arts announce the solo exhibition Profane Illumination by contemporary artist Zhu Xinjian (1953–2014), on view from 13 June to 10 August. The exhibition gives audiences a chance to see how this leading figure of China’s New Literati Painting movement reworked traditional Chinese painting through an international perspective. Deeply rooted in tradition while also responding to human nature and the changes of era, Zhu’s work reflects the rise of individual awareness after China’s Reform and Opening Up. It also offers an important example of how local art traditions can move beyond the choice between “tradition” and “modernity” under globalization.

INK IN DIALOGUE: CHINESE BRUSHWORK MEETS WESTERN EXPRESSIONISM

Zhu Xinjian used traditional Chinese brushwork as medium, keeping its expressive while using free and rugged lines to echo Western Expressionism. Rather than simply copying Western art, he developed his own visual language

Zhu Xinjian brought street life and erotic metaphors into ink painting, challenging the traditional image of literati art as refined and aloof. In his works, desire and daily life are no longer excluded from the art of ink but become part of his depiction of real human nature.

Zhu Xinjian took traditional Chinese painting as his foundation and reinterpreted it in his own way. He drew beyond fixed subjects and historical conventions, using an honest and humorous way to portray people and everyday life.

As cultures come into closer contact, Zhu Xinjian’s work reminds us that tradition does not have to lose itself when it meets outside influences. True exchange is not about imitation or replacement, but about allowing new possibilities to grow from the encounter.
