在香港，我們習慣了「快」。快來快去、快速閱讀、快速下決定。但荔枝窩這條三百年歷史的客家村，偏偏教人另一種節奏——用泥土種植、用植物編織、用聲音與天地對話。由香港大學公民社會與治理研究中心主辦的藝術項目「以藝術說傳統智慧」，邀請三位藝術家帶領新晉創作者，走進這片自然沃土，以「泥土」、「植物」、「聲音」為媒介，把傳統智慧變成當代藝術，讓城市人重新學習「慢下來」的藝術。

In Hong Kong, we’re used to fast — fast walking, fast scrolling, fast decisions. But Lai Chi Wo, a 300-year-old Hakka village, teaches a different rhythm: planting with soil, weaving with plants, singing with the land. Presented by the Centre for Civil Society and Governance at The University of Hong Kong, the art project Celebrating Traditional Wisdom Through Art invites three mentors and a group of emerging artists to turn ancestral wisdom into contemporary art — and to remind city dwellers how to slow down.

推介原因 WHY IT MATTERS

「萬物之始，大道至簡。」老子的哲學與愛因斯坦的科學智慧，不約而同指向一個核心：把握簡單背後的深刻。傳統智慧正是從這種「原初經驗」中孕育而成——人用雙手創造生活，並將技藝一代一代傳下去。

然而在追求科技未來的過程中，我們漸漸遺忘了人與自然的深層連結。城市追求效率與舒適，鄉郊則教導我們善用在地資源、順應自然節奏。兩者特性互補，構成一個共存而不分割的社會結構。

有見及此，香港大學公民社會與治理研究中心多年來致力推動永續鄉郊及城鄉共生。是次「以藝術說傳統智慧」項目，正是這理念的延續。項目選址於自然資源豐富、擁有逾三百年歷史的荔枝窩客家村，邀請三位理念契合的藝術家——張煒詩、郝立仁與盧可兒——帶領多位新晉藝術家，聚焦大自然中的三個核心元素：泥土、植物與聲音，探索它們如何契合生活中的衣、食、住、行及鄉郊文化。

“Everything starts simple, grows more complex, and ultimately circles back to its essence.” This ancient wisdom of Laozi, echoed by Einstein, points to a core truth: we must grasp the profound reality behind simplicity. Traditional knowledge was born from these “original experiences” — hands creating life, skills passed down through generations.

Yet in our race toward a technological future, we’ve lost touch with nature. The city chases efficiency; the countryside teaches us to follow the land’s rhythm. Together, they form a balanced, caring society.

For years, the Centre for Civil Society and Governance at HKU has championed rural sustainability and urban-rural partnership. This project continues that mission. Set in Lai Chi Wo — a Hakka village rich in biodiversity — three mentors Benjamin Hao, Rachel Cheung, and Connie Lo led emerging artists to explore three core elements: Soil, Plants, and Sound — and how they shape food, clothing, shelter, transport, and rural culture.

泥土：滋養與循環的起點
在傳統農耕實踐中，泥土與植物是一個共生互利的循環：泥土滋養植物，植物則促進泥土再生。藝術家帶領團隊通過觀察、理解、感受、想像與思考，探索前人所傳承的智慧，並以創作回應這片土地。

Soil: The Beginning of Nourishment and Cycle
In traditional farming practices, soil and plants form a symbiotic cycle: soil nourishes plants, and plants help regenerate the soil. The artists led their team through observation, understanding, feeling, imagination, and reflection, exploring ancestral wisdom and responding to the land through their creations.

植物：從生活手藝到藝術轉化
傳統智慧源於日常生活手藝，經由技術的精進演化為工藝，而藝術是工藝的延續與轉化。新晉藝術家在指導下，將植物相關的鄉郊知識轉化為藝術作品，展現傳統智慧的多重面向與創造潛力。

Plants: From Daily Craft to Artistic Transformation
Traditional wisdom originates from the crafts of daily life. Through mastery, craft evolves into art, and art is the continuation and transformation of craft. Guided by their mentors, emerging artists transformed plant-related rural knowledge into artworks, revealing the multiple dimensions and creative potential of traditional wisdom.

聲音：人與天地的和諧共鳴
在播種與收割的重要時刻，人們以歌謠和音樂融入自然，與之共鳴。人為的聲音與自然、天地的節奏和諧合一。藝術團隊將這些鄉村獨有的聲音體驗融入創作，讓觀眾感受鄉村的生命力。

Sound: Harmonious Resonance Between Humans and Nature
During important moments of sowing and harvesting, people used songs and music to blend with nature, resonating with the land. Human-made sounds harmonise with the rhythms of nature and the universe. The art team incorporated these unique sonic experiences of rural life into their creations, allowing audiences to feel the vitality of the countryside.

以藝術連結過去與當下
三位指導藝術家不僅以傳統智慧為創作主題，更肩負知識承傳與培育新一代的使命。他們透過創作，展現出傳統智慧的多重面向、創造潛力與永續價值。藝術不僅能傳遞訊息，更能凝聚力量，連結過去與當下，讓傳統知識與智慧在當代語境中重新顯現。

Connecting Past and Present Through Art
The three mentor artists not only take traditional wisdom as their creative theme but also shoulder the mission of knowledge transmission and nurturing a new generation. Through their creations, they reveal the multiple dimensions, creative potential, and sustainable value of traditional wisdom. Art does more than convey a message — it gathers the power to connect past and present, allowing traditional knowledge and wisdom to manifest anew in a contemporary context.

關於藝術家 About the Artists

張煒詩從事創作、教育、策展與統籌。以陶瓷的脆弱性探討「平衡」與「關係」，作品呈現張力與和諧、理性與感性。策展項目包括2019年「尋田．探土」荔枝窩藝術計劃及「在地」陶藝節。2001年獲RMIT大學藝術文學士，2004及2009年獲新特蘭大學及密德蕯斯大學藝術碩士。

郝立仁生於香港，一位跨學科藝術家，其生活時間一半於香港市區，一半於香港鄉郊。郝氏於2011年取得皇家墨爾本理工大學與香港藝術學院合辦的藝術學士學位，於2018年獲得哈特福德大學的跨學科藝術碩士學位。他的創作探討人類、自然與社會之間的關係，同時透過作品引起反思與重新想像。

盧可兒專注混合媒介創作，常以視覺的腦袋去思考聲音，探討視覺和空間喚起的聽覺感受及其微妙關係。創作題材由身邊的事物出發，延伸至個人與外界的關係。2015畢業於澳洲皇家墨爾本理工大學及香港藝術學院合辦的藝術文學士課程，2018年完成英國列斯大學藝術碩士課程。

Rachel CHEUNG, artist, educator, and curator. She employs the fragility of ceramics to explore “equilibrium” and “relationship,” evoking tension and harmony, reason and emotion. She initiated and curated the “On Earth” Lai Chi Wo Art Project and Ceramic Festival (2019). She earned her BA (FA) from RMIT University (2001), and her MA (FA) from the University of Sunderland (2004) and Middlesex University (2009).

HAO Lap Yan, Benjamin, was born and lives in Hong Kong, is an interdisciplinary artist who spends half of his time in urban Hong Kong and the other half in rural Hong Kong. Hao received his BFA from RMIT and Hong Kong Art School in 2011 and gained his interdisciplinary art MFA from the University of Hartford in 2018. His practice examines the relationship among human beings, nature and society, stimulates reflection and reimagination through his works.

Connie LO creates interdisciplinary art that explores how visuals and space elicit auditory response, often thinking about sound with a visual mindset, and the subtle relationship between our spatial, visual and auditory senses. Her practice springs from her personal life; she often draws inspiration from intimate experiences and extends to the relationship between the individual and the outside world. Graduated from the Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) programme co-presented by RMIT University and Hong Kong Art School in 2015. She subsequently completed a Master of Arts (Fine Arts) degree at the University of Leeds in 2018.

荔枝窩是香港少數仍然保留傳統「風水林」佈局的客家村落。村後的風水林不僅是自然屏障，更是當地生態多樣性的重要組成部分。藝術家在駐村創作期間，親身感受了這片獨特的自然環境，並將其融入作品之中。

Lai Chi Wo is one of the few Hakka villages in Hong Kong that still retains its traditional “feng shui woodland” layout. The woodland behind the village is not only a natural barrier but also an important part of the local biodiversity. During their residency, the artists personally experienced this unique natural environment and incorporated it into their work.
