From the obsession of pen strokes to the ethereal glow of watercolors, Gakiya Isamu dismantles the skeletal remains of comics to compose visual poems of “Horror-Pop.” Every hue he lays down is a mark of order found within the chaos of modern reality.

Gakiya Isamu, also known as Guinea Mate, is a captivating Japanese illustrator and artist hailing from Okinawa. His surreal creations weave together influences from postwar American pop culture—like horror films, sci-fi, and old comics—with deep personal reflections on today’s overwhelming information and shifting values. Working as both a music illustrator for artists like Ayuni D and a fine artist, he showcases his talent through gallery exhibitions and beloved annual artbooks such as “CHILLDIE VIII.”

Born amid Okinawa’s American military presence, Gakiya grew up immersed in cartoons, movies, and comics from local TV, shaping his unique worldview. His art delves into themes of self-salvation via invented rituals, with guinea pigs as quirky personal deities and nods to Buddhism amid struggles like panic disorder. These ideas come alive in sculptures, doctrines, and vignettes that blend times, places, and psychological depth.

Gakiya’s pieces burst with dense, sketchbook-style linework, where human faces morph into animals, masks, mechanical forms, or dreamlike elements, striking a balance between discomfort and allure. He deconstructs comic outlines into “collage of lines” portraits, layers on vibrant pop colors, freestyle layouts, and ritualistic dripping paint. Recurring motifs evoke postwar American vibes, imaginary religions, and emotional tensions in a surreal, horror-tinged pop aesthetic—obsessive yet polished, with imperfect inks over modern flair.

He blends analog and digital methods seamlessly: scanning outlines for digital collage and deconstruction, then layering oil or acrylic paints for lasting vibrancy, alongside pen drawings and mixed-media collages with paper, plastics, and tickets. Finishing drips symbolize rituals, while client illustrations mix digital precision with analog soul. Fluid watercolors bring ethereal portraits to life, highlighting his masterful lines and hues.
