In an era muffled by algorithms and artificial intelligence, what does it mean to hold a “book”? This 2026 cross-disciplinary showcase brings together visual artists, writers, and lighting designers to deconstruct the legacy of Hong Kong’s master printers. By reimagining the traditional pillars of “setting, printing, cutting, and binding,” these creators transform the book from a physical object into a profound meditation on linguistic dysfunction and digital survival. 當代印藝2026年主題展覽「點止執印切釘——書的藝術」,將融合傳統活版印刷的歷史,聯同六組不同界別的藝術家包括視覺藝術家劉家俊、李曉巧、蘇柏姿X石嬋卿、作家黃怡、詩人黃裕邦和舞台燈光設計師劉銘鏗,展現對「書」的詮釋,思考語言文字失能的當下境況,以及印本在人工智能年代的角色。「點止執印切釘——書的藝術」展覽於2026年3月21至9月30日公開展出,費用全免,並設有多個講座、工作坊、參展藝術家系列活動,讓大眾了解傳統印刷工藝。

Contemporary Press Arts’ 2026 thematic exhibition, “More than Setting, Printing, Cutting, and Binding — The Art of the Book,” integrates the history of traditional letterpress with six groups of artists: visual artists Lau Ka-chun, Li Hiu-chau, and So Pak-chi X Shek Sim-hing; writer Wong Yi; poet Nicholas Wong; and stage lighting designer Lau Ming-hang. They present various interpretations of the “book,” reflecting on the current state of linguistic dysfunction and the role of printed matter in the age of Artificial Intelligence. The exhibition is open from March 21 to September 30, 2026, with free admission. A series of talks, workshops, and artist-led activities will be launched, allowing the public to understand traditional printing crafts.

1️⃣執印切釘:傳承印刷非遺 The Craft: Hong Kong’s Print Heritage

展內分為多個區域,於歷史重現的空間有八位退休印刷師傅以錄像口述分享昔日職涯與經歷,介紹已表列為香港非物質文化遺產的活字印刷「執、印、切、釘」四大工序;同時帶來多件珍貴藏品,其中罕有在港展出的活字印刷紙型,於六十年代製成,曾用作印刷民生書籍,以及香港製造切紙機、酒樓點心紙和電影戲橋(宣傳單張)等紙品的電版(照片蝕刻鋅版,用於圖像印刷),均見證了本地印刷業的黃金時期。

The exhibition is divided into several zones. In a space recreating history, eight retired printing masters share their past careers and experiences through video oral histories, introducing the four major processes of letterpress printing—”setting, printing, cutting, and binding”—which are listed as part of Hong Kong’s intangible cultural heritage. The exhibition also features several precious collectibles, including rare letterpress paper molds (flongs) manufactured in the 1960s used for printing lifestyle books. Additionally, Hong Kong-made paper cutters and zinc blocks (photo-etched plates used for image printing) for items like restaurant dim sum sheets and movie “handbills” (promotional flyers) bear witness to the golden era of the local printing industry.

2️⃣定義重塑:解構書的可能性 Redefining Forms: The Book Transformed

在多個當代創作的區域,有六組藝術家的作品,展現在當代藝術的語境下,「書」如何跨越媒介,突破釘裝和紙本等形式上的常規。版畫家劉家俊將歷史檔案照片轉化為筆觸大膽且具觸感特質的木版油印畫製作故事書,並利用人工智能根據木版畫生成虛假的歷史照片,邀請觀者質疑並探索建立、消逝與歷史之間的交織;燈光設計師兼紙藝藝術家劉銘鏗則運用光的穿透與折射,以裝置作品呈現眾聲喧嘩的情境,邀請觀者一同反思言語氾濫、溝通失效的當代社會現象。

In the contemporary creation zones, works by six groups of artists demonstrate how the “book” transcends media and breaks through formal conventions such as binding and paper within the context of contemporary art. Printmaker Lau Ka-chun transforms historical archival photos into storybooks using woodblock oil prints with bold brushstrokes and tactile qualities; he further utilizes AI to generate “fake” historical photos based on the woodblocks, inviting viewers to question and explore the interweaving of establishment, disappearance, and history. Lighting designer and paper artist Lau Ming-hang utilizes the penetration and refraction of light in an installation that presents a scene of “heteroglossia,” inviting viewers to reflect on the contemporary social phenomena of verbal excess and failed communication.

3️⃣演化之書:由平面到立體 Evolving Forms: From Page to Space

李曉巧以版畫為媒介探索源自電腦科學的「遞歸」,描述一種不斷重複又演化的過程,邀請觀眾思索科技與傳統技藝的交匯,對時間、圖像與創作本質作深刻反思;蘇柏姿、石嬋卿攜手探問「書」的定義,將報紙內頁徹底解構,再運用書籍裝訂技法造成立體裝置,重新定義書的形式,令新聞事件突破原有的線性敘事。

Li Hiu-chau uses printmaking as a medium to explore “recursion,” a concept derived from computer science describing a process of continuous repetition and evolution. This invites the audience to ponder the intersection of technology and traditional craftsmanship, offering a profound reflection on time, imagery, and the essence of creation. So Pak-chi and Shek Sim-hing join forces to question the definition of a “book” by completely deconstructing newspaper pages and using bookbinding techniques to create three-dimensional installations, redefining the form of the book and allowing news events to break free from their original linear narratives.

4️⃣文字溢出:文學與活字的博弈 Overflowing Words: Literature Meets Type

今次展覽兩位文學家亦帶來創新作品:作家黃怡以香港粵語的幽默感為創作核心,透過活字及原創插畫,製作出各式富有香港色彩的印刷品,呈現香港人語言混雜的生活特色,以及實驗多種中英翻譯的策略;詩人黃裕邦則創作了484個短語,每個均以「Writing as」(「寫作作為」) 開頭,透過版畫印刷展出,邀請觀者體驗語言最流動、最具生成性與溢瀉的狀態。同場亦有活字排印藝術家黃洛尹以逾四千枚活字排成的作品《字》及新世代活版創作者的活字印版,連同本地設計品牌「G.O.D.住好啲」的活版磅重卡,皆展現出活版印藝為藝文創作所帶來的可能。 

Two literary figures also contribute innovative works to this exhibition: writer Wong Yi centers her creation on the humor of Hong Kong Cantonese, using movable type and original illustrations to produce various printed materials rich in Hong Kong character. Her work presents the linguistic hybridity of Hong Kong life and experiments with various strategies of Chinese-English translation. Poet Nicholas Wong has created 484 phrases, each beginning with “Writing as,” displayed through printmaking to invite viewers to experience language in its most fluid, generative, and overflowing state. Also on display is the work Character by typography artist Wong Lok-yin, composed of over four thousand pieces of movable type, alongside type galleys by a new generation of letterpress creators and letterpress-printed weighing cards from the local design brand “G.O.D.” (Goods of Desire), all demonstrating the possibilities that letterpress art brings to cultural and artistic creation.

背景 BACKGROUND

當代印藝 由2000年成立的香港版畫工作室營運,座落於石硤尾4,000平方呎的版畫工作室以及中環逾千呎的畫廊空間。當代印藝•中環於2024年進駐元創方,藉由常設展區「活字館」和專題展覽空間,推廣活版印藝及香港版畫藝術。2025年2月,該空間舉行首個專題展覽「細說從頭——鴨巴甸街的印藝傳奇」,探索全球首套完整中文鉛活字「香港字」的歷史及本地活版印藝的新近發展。

Print Art Contemporary is operated by the Hong Kong Open Printshop, established in 2000. It is situated across a 4,000-square-foot printmaking studio in Shek Kip Mei and a gallery space of over 1,000 square feet in Central. In 2024, Contemporary Press Arts • Central moved into PMQ, where it promotes letterpress and Hong Kong printmaking through its permanent exhibition area, the “Letterpress Archive,” and dedicated thematic exhibition spaces. In February 2025, the venue hosted its inaugural thematic exhibition, “The Beginning of a Tale: The Printing Legend of Aberdeen Street,” exploring the history of the “Hong Kong Type”—the world’s first complete set of Chinese movable metal type—and recent developments in local letterpress art.
