Between Black and Gold: The Dance of Emotion by Aka C.

Between black and gold, Aka C. distills the most delicate tremors of emotion through the tip of her pen. Her lines do not merely define form—they breathe, tracing the quiet ebb of hope, melancholy, and tenderness that flicker through shifting light. In Fluttering Wishes, her fourth solo exhibition at the Ocean Terminal Art Gallery, she invites viewers to step into a sanctuary where stillness glows and the heart remembers how to feel.

WHY IT MATTERS

Local emerging artist Aka C., formerly of a renowned singing and dancing group, presents her fourth solo exhibition, “Fluttering Wishes,” at the Ocean Terminal Art Gallery from February 27 until March 22, 2026. Staying true to her signature black-and-white and gold metal-nib pen style, the artist weaves intricate lines with contrasting light and shadow to construct a series of visually poetic and narratively compelling scenes, offering a healing sanctuary within the bustling city.

Joyful Wishes in the Dance of Chiaroscuro

The exhibition title “Fluttering Wishes” evokes the imagery of “joyful wishes amidst the dance of light and shadow”—much like sunlight filtering through leaves, flickering for an instant yet leaving behind a lasting warmth. This poetic title stems from the artist’s deep appreciation for life’s small, quiet moments of happiness: the dappled sunlight on the ground, the way light moves through foliage. To Aka C., these fleeting scenes hold a timeless, healing quality. Through her signature black-and-white and goldr metal-nib pen drawings, she gives form to animal figures caught between reality and imagination, weaving in symbols of luck from around the world. Each piece becomes a visual prayer, layered with quiet hopes and blessings. More than a personal pursuit of joy, this body of work extends a gentle invitation—a tender companion for those who pause to look.

As Aka C. reflects in her exhibition statement: “Though shadows may fall along the path, the light never truly departs.” Each piece becomes a quiet testament to this belief—within the depths of black-and-white lines, a subtle glimmer of gold quietly endures, gently reminding us that no matter the circumstances, warmth and hope remain ever-present.

Zodiac Lucky Cat Series: Limited Edition Signed Prints

Aka C. has created a special series of twelve small-scale works, blending the beloved imagery of Maneki-neko (the beckoning cat) with the twelve Chinese zodiac animals. Conceived as a set of pieces meant to convey blessings and spark joy, this collection infuses traditional symbolism with a playful, whimsical spirit. Each artwork brings a distinct character to life—a tiger perching atop a lucky cat with paw raised in greeting, sheep and goats nestled within the cat’s bell, a mischievous monkey clutching both a lucky charm and its feline companion. Every stroke reveals a delicate yet lively touch.

KOFFA Cross-media Collaboration with Premium Lighting Brand KOFFA

Another highlight of the exhibition is Aka C.’s collaboration with the renowned premium lighting brand KOFFA. Together, unveiling a large-scale lighting art installation, Also Known As, marking their first-ever presentation of a work that fuses artistic vision with craftsmanship. Measuring nearly one meter in width and half a meter in height, the installation is composed of thirteen meticulously crafted “pen nibs”—a symbolic tribute to Aka C.’s 13-year creative journey in the art world. By enlarging, deconstructing, and reassembling the very tool she knows best—the pen—the artist transforms it into the core element of a three-dimensional structure, extending the fluidity of line work into a tangible play of light and space. Also Known As marks the artist’s first foray into lighting design.

小貼士 TIPS

「AKA」既是 Aka C. 名字的縮寫,亦對應「亦稱為」(Also Known As) 之意。

“AKA” serves as both a shorthand for Aka C.’s name and a direct reference to its meaning—”Also Known As.” Beyond the labels others assign us, what undiscovered names lie within? And how might we learn to embrace every facet of who we are?
