Josep Maria Carbó Martí is a self‑taught Catalan artist whose delicate portraits transform everyday faces into quietly luminous images. Working primarily with pencil and watercolor, he captures the emotional depth of ordinary people, turning digital encounters into intimate, physical works of art. Born in 1972 in Premià de Mar in Spain, he drew obsessively from an early age and later refined his craft independently, without formal academic training.

The 2020 pandemic became a decisive turning point in his practice. Confined at home, he returned seriously to drawing and began sharing portraits online, where his work quickly reached audiences well beyond Spain. During and after lockdown, he painted from photographs sent by followers and acquaintances, building a global, community‑driven portrait project that helped his watercolors enter private collections across Europe, the Americas, and Asia.

Much of the impact in Carbó’s portraits comes from the deliberately abrupt value shifts. He builds faces out of clear, blocky light–shadow planes, with hard edges along cheekbones, noses, and jawlines that can feel almost carved rather than softly modeled. Instead of gently blended gradients, you often get stark jumps between lit skin, deep shadows, and dark hair, reinforced by visible pencil contours and crisp watercolor edges. This gives his portraits a slightly graphic, faceted quality that contrasts with the softness of his subjects’ expressions.

His aesthetic leans toward realistic, close‑cropped head‑and‑shoulder portraits with minimal backgrounds, keeping attention on the sitter’s gaze and expression. Thematically, his work reflects the emotional landscape of a connected yet physically distant world—people known primarily through screens, treated with the dignity and care of traditional portraiture. In uniting classical craft with contemporary, social‑media‑driven subject matter, Carbó’s portraits invite viewers to pause and recognize the quiet significance of ordinary faces.
