Pluriversal Futures brings together multiple visions of tomorrow. HKDI Gallery presents its first 2025-2026 flagship exhibition in collaboration with Ars Electronica, featuring 6 award-winning international artists from Prix Ars Electronica and local HKDI student talent. From a 4-meter Norwegian robot to a Hong Kong animator’s virtual clone, from Brazilian video games to local students’ urban flowers, this exhibition invites you to explore diverse futures where art, technology and society intertwine.

WHY IT MATTERS

How do we imagine the future in uncertain times? Pluriversal Futures introduces the concept of “pluriversal” — the coexistence of multiple worldviews, futures and realities. The exhibition showcases award-winning works from Prix Ars Electronica, the world’s longest-running media art competition, spanning New Animation Art, Digital Musics & Sound Art, and Interactive Art+. Through gameplay, serious interactions and smart storytelling, these works offer unique perspectives on our increasingly complex world.

A Four-Meter Robot Speaks

A four-meter-tall robot stands armless and immobile, yet bears a hyper-realistic projected face and voice generated through AI synthesis and human performance. Activated throughout the day, it delivers an 11-minute monologue on the human history of violence, from ancient genocides to contemporary displacement. Norwegian artists Thomas Kva and Frode Oldereid push animation’s boundaries by fusing industrial robotics, CGI, large-language-model scripting, generative voice, hydraulic choreography and projection mapping. The work questions: Is violence a tragic exception or recurring pattern? As responsibility shifts to systems and code, machines remember what we prefer to forget.

The Cast of the Invisible

主角W.A.I. 影片記錄W.A.I.

Hong Kong multidisciplinary artist Lau Wai presents a CGI animated short film exploring the blurred line between virtual and physical existence. The protagonist W.A.I. is a motion-capture-suit-clad virtual clone of the artist, trapped in a vocation that grants purpose while stripping individuality. The 14-minute film follows W.A.I. through days of existential confusion. Their ubiquitous uniform pervades private life, revealing how digitally reproduced beings are caged within stunted identities. Motion-capture actors symbolize being “in-between” real and virtual worlds yet never fully present in either. What happens when the “original” becomes redundant?

Rediscovering Hong Kong Flora

HKDI Higher Diploma students Chih Pui Yi, Ao Kin Man, Wong Kai Cheung and Yu Chi Shing created a video installation featuring Hong Kong’s native flowers. Plumeria, Jacaranda, Rhododendron — blooms easily overlooked amid the city’s relentless rhythm are transformed into fluid visual forms through digital artistry. The work explores tensions between permanence and transience, chaos and harmony. Each composition becomes a living canvas capturing urban nature’s resilience and fragility. The student team translates organic colors and shapes into evolving digital landscapes, inviting viewers to pause and rediscover the poetry hidden between glass and concrete.

From0: The Musical Nature of Language

French duo Superbe’s interactive sound and kinetic installation explores the unstable and musical nature of language. Visitors record words, phrases or sounds, which the installation divides into twelve fragments broadcast by pendulums vibrating at unique rhythms. Each pendulum moves at different speeds, creating distinctive harmonies reminiscent of sliding sounds as word sequences shift into chaos. Visitors use button controls to isolate sounds, freeze sequences or create custom music loops. “From0” evokes the starting point, cycle and unity. When the scroll bar is smallest, it sounds the original spoken word; at its largest, it produces abstract sound.

Weaving Meets Computing

French artist Diane Cescutti’s interactive installation combines a West African loom and computer. Visitors use Manjak woven fabric as a keyboard to explore a video game blending texts, 3D images and footage shot in Dakar, Senegal. The machine deity narrates an alternative history of computation, revealing connections between computers, Manjak weaving knowledge and mathematics extending to before electricity’s discovery. At its core is system thinking. When you press the fabric with two hands, electricity flows through your body, closing the circuit to activate the piece. “You are part of a system” is both metaphor and literal function. As traditional textile crafts disappear and technologies become opaque, this work presents a forgotten branch of computer history.
