What is your impression towards history and geography? Boring text books? Or repetitive recitations? Despite these impressions, illustrator Azurite decided to use the arts she drew to show us the humanized side of Hong Kong Districts.

Azurite has started creating the Hong Kong District Personification series since 2019, and now has around 250K followers on Instagram. She has participated in different creative markets, allowing fans of the series to buy related merchandise.

Azurite’s inspiration came from her previous job, where she had to get in contact with people from different districts and visit different districts. She discovered that even though there are differences among the people, they also have some common points, leading her to think about “what if the districts are personified?”.

Even if it looks easy, the preparations are never sloppy! Before drawing, Azurite will not just research online, but also visit the district multiple times and chat with residents there to understand their thoughts and feelings. This seriousness towards creation let the viewers feel the sense of belonging among the work, and also humanized the characters.

Frequently going in and out of reconstructing old districts became the reason Azurite made up her mind to create the series. While observing the change of the surroundings, she also wants to record how the place looks in her own way. This record quietly stayed within the characters’ details and their settings.
