Amid economic uncertainty two decades ago, Professor Jao Tsung-I gifted his calligraphy of the Heart Sutra to Hong Kong, a wish for inner peace that became the iconic “Wisdom Path” on Lantau. Now, to celebrate its 20th anniversary, the exhibition “Transcribing Wisdom: Jao Tsung-I’s Heart Sutra Calligraphy and the ‘Wisdom Path’” brings this monumental art into the gallery. 為慶祝大嶼山「心經簡林」落成二十週年，香港大學饒宗頤學術館與一新美術館聯合主辦「般若墨妙：饒宗頤的《心經》與『心經簡林』」專題展覽於今天隆重開幕。這個展覽呈獻公私珍藏饒教授各體書《心經》精品，包括「心經簡林」書法原作，並附有主題相關的繪畫作品，與觀眾分享饒教授《心經》藝術多元之美，以及「心經簡林」深厚的文化淵源和藝術底蘊。「心經簡林」落成至今剛好二十年；適逢一新美術館遷館西源里一週年，令這次與香港大學饒宗頤學術館的合作更具意義。

Jointly presented by Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole of The University of Hong Kong and Sun Museum, “Transcribing Wisdom: Jao Tsung-I’s Heart Sutra Calligraphy and the ‘Wisdom Path’” is officially unveiled today, as a special exhibition marking the twentieth anniversary of the “Wisdom Path”. This show brings together a choice selection of Professor Jao Tsung-I’s Heart Sutra calligraphy in a variety of scripts and styles, drawn from both museums and private collections, and includes the original calligraphy used for the “Wisdom Path” and related paintings by Jao. This collaboration is particularly meaningful as it celebrates the twentieth anniversary of the “Wisdom Path” as well as the first anniversary of Sun Museum’s relocation to Sai Yuen Lane.

1️⃣ 慈悲的饋贈：緣起與祝願
位於大嶼山鳳凰山麓的「心經簡林」緣起於2002年，當時饒教授眼見香港受金融風暴和經濟低迷打擊，人心不安，於是贈送他手書的心經墨寶予香港市民，希望這份祝福能帶來內心的平靜。香港特區政府珍而重之將這份厚禮轉化成大型戶外常設展覽，讓全港市民和訪港旅客均可欣賞。

A Gift of Peace: The Origin of the Wisdom Path
The “Wisdom Path”, located at the foot of Lantau Peak, with its origin traces back to 2002, when Jao gifted his handwritten large-character Heart Sutra calligraphy to Hong Kong amidst the Asia financial crisis, hoping to offer inner peace to the city’s residents. The Hong Kong SAR Government transformed that calligraphy into the large-scale permanent outdoor installation now known as the “Wisdom Path”, sharing such good wish to all the people of Hong Kong and visitors alike.

2️⃣ ∞的意境：建築與空性
「心經簡林」於2005年落成，是全球最大的戶外木刻佛經簡群，由38根木柱，以∞型排列組成，寓意「無限」。其中37根木柱雕刻了饒教授的大字《心經》書法，最高的一根木柱則留白，象徵《心經》中「空」的思想。「心經簡林」與大眾分享大乘佛教核心經典中的慈悲與智慧，不啻是個集「真、善、美」於一身、非常獨特的人文勝境。

∞ Symbolism: The Architecture of Emptiness
Completed in 2005, the “Wisdom Path” is the largest outdoor wood inscription installation carved with Buddhist scripture in the world. Comprising thirty-eight timbers arranged in the shape of the infinity symbol, “∞”. Of these timbers, thirty-seven are carved with Professor Jao Tsung-I’s large-character Heart Sutra calligraphy, rendered in its original size. The column located at the highest point of the hill is left blank to evoke the concept of “emptiness” or “boundlessness”, central to the Heart Sutra’s teachings. Heart Sutra shares the compassion and wisdom found in the core texts of Mahayana Buddhism with the public. It is a unique cultural spot that embodies the essence of “truth, goodness, and beauty”.

3️⃣ 智慧的核心：《心經》的教誨
《心經》雖然只有260字，但卻蘊含了大乘佛教《大般若經》的兩大要義：「因緣」和「空」。經文中「色即是空，空即是色」兩句最為人熟知。饒教授曾解釋，「色」指的是有形的事物，而「空」則是無形的變化。在饒宗頤教授眼中，理解事物的變遷是一種智慧，能夠讓人釋放執著，獲得內心的平靜。《心經》的智慧讓人從容面對人生路上的起落、物質世界的成住壞空，坦然面對人世間的無常。

The Heart of Wisdom: Key Teachings of the Sutra
The Heart Sutra, in its Chinese translation by Monk Xuanzang, consists of a mere 260 characters. Yet it articulates two core teachings of the Prajnaparamita Sutra, a classic of Mahayana Buddhism: that all things arise in dependence upon other things, and the fundamental boundlessness or emptiness of all phenomena. Among the most commonly recited phrases in the Heart Sutra is “Form is boundlessness, boundlessness is form.” Professor Jao elucidates it as follows: “Form refers to things with material appearance, whereas boundlessness refers to the in-between of things that does not take a form or shape.” In Professor Jao Tsung-I’s perspective, understanding the changes in life is a form of wisdom that allows one to let go of attachments and attain inner peace. The wisdom of the Heart Sutra enables individuals to face the ups and downs of life, the transient nature of the material world, and the impermanence of human existence with calmness and acceptance.

4️⃣ 觀展指南：分兩期呈獻
因為部份展品尺寸闊大，「般若墨妙：饒宗頤的《心經》與『心經簡林』」專題展覽會分為兩期展出，以便觀眾全面欣賞作品的全貌。第一期展期為2025年10月4日至12月14日，第二期展期為2025年12月16日至2026年3月1日。展覽期間，香港大學饒宗頤學術館出版精美展覽圖錄，收錄李焯芬教授的序言、姚錫安博士的展覽專文、饒宗頤教授與《心經》結緣的時間軸，以及專題展覽中展出的各項藝術精品。

Plan Your Visit: Exhibition in Two Phases
Due to the large dimensions of some of the calligraphy, selected works will be on display on rotation. “Transcribing Wisdom: Jao Tsung-I’s Heart Sutra Calligraphy and the ‘Wisdom Path’” will run in two phases: the first phase from 4 October to 14 December, 2025, and the second from 16 December 2025 to 1 March 2026. A catalogue dedicated to the exhibition has been published, featuring a foreword by Professor Lee Chack-fan, a special essay by Dr John Yiu, a timeline of Jao’s connection with the Heart Sutra and images of all the exhibits. During the exhibition period, Sun Museum will also offer a series of free public activities.

饒宗頤教授（1917 – 2018），生於廣東潮州。其學術著作單行本、編著書刋、書畫集與詩詞集等近一百三十種，學術論文和其他文章過千篇（資料至2014年為限）。饒教授是蜚聲國際的百科全書式大學者，素有國學大師之稱，近年更有國寶之譽。他在歷史、文學、語言文字、宗教、哲學、藝術、中外文化關係等人文科學領域中，皆有卓越的成就和突出的貢獻，備受海內外同儕和後輩尊崇。饒教授又是當代最著名的中國傳統文學巨匠，古體、律、絕，無一不精，尤擅填詞，又騷、賦、駢、散，無一不曉，可謂卓立獨行於當代中國文壇，別樹一幟。饒教授更是一位傑出的藝術家，在書法、山水、人物畫的創作上，承先啟後，自成一家，甚至在音樂，特別是古琴，也素有涉獵和創造。饒教授可謂文、藝、學三者兼備，堪稱「一身而兼三絕」，在香港以至於當代的中國，實是百年難得一遇的巨擘。

Prof. Jao Tsung-I (1917-2018) was born in Chaozhou, Guangdong Province. He authored nearly 130 academic works, including monographs, edited volumes, collections of calligraphy and painting, and poetry, as well as over a thousand scholarly and other articles (data up to 2014). An internationally renowned encyclopedic scholar, Jao was widely recognized as a Master of Chinese Classics and, in recent years, honored as a “national treasure.” He made exceptional achievements and significant contributions across various fields in the humanities, such as history, literature, linguistics, religion, philosophy, art, and Sino-foreign cultural relations, earning profound respect from counterparts and successors both in China and abroad. Jao was also one of the most eminent contemporary masters of traditional Chinese literature and excelled in all classical poetic forms, establishing a distinctive and independent presence in modern Chinese literary circles. Beyond his literary and scholarly accomplishments, Jao was an outstanding artist. His works in calligraphy, landscape, and figure painting inherited tradition while forging new paths, forming a unique style of his own. He was also knowledgeable and creative in music, especially in the art of the guqin. Jao thus embodied a rare synthesis of literature, art, and scholarship—truly a “master of the three perfections.” In Hong Kong and across contemporary China, he stands as a once-in-a-century intellectual giant.
