CULTIVATING INNER LANDSCAPES: AU HOI LAM & CHANG HOI WOOD’S POETIC SANCTUARY

In the hustle and bustle of city life, have you ever yearned for a “garden” where your soul could rest? The visual and spatial art exhibition created by AU Hoi Lam and CHANG Hoi Wood invites you to temporarily leave the real world and rediscover yourself in a garden where light and shadow interweave.

WHY IT MATTERS

“If there is a garden, where would I be?” is a visual and spatial art project that create a “garden” for viewers to stay, explore and enjoy. Though gardens relate to the nature, all gardens are indeed artificial. Nature within the garden is a human projection with layers of mediation. The two artists invite viewers through their aesthetics to traverse “In the Shade” and linger “In the Garden,” re-examining the relationship between individual and world.

Dual Experience of “In the Shade” and “In the Garden”

The exhibition space is divided into two areas: “In the Shade” allows viewers to traverse changes in light and shadow, while “In the Garden” provides space for lingering and contemplation. Visitors can stroll and wander within, temporarily isolated from the real world, idling, sitting, and lying in tranquility, experiencing different spatial dimensions.

Poetic Fusion of Light, Shadow and Materials

The installations within the “garden” focus on changes in light and shadow, reality and illusion, weight, airflow, texture, and viewpoints, connecting to lunar trajectories and the retreat of things in time. Multiple material elements construct a holistic work, allowing viewers to open their consciousness through sensory experience and nurture body and mind.

Contemplation of Artificial Nature

The exhibition explores the essence of gardens as artificial constructs related to nature, presenting “nature” as layers of human contemplation born from reflecting on the natural world. Viewers experience personal retrospection, contemplation, leisure, and vigilance within this space.

Encountering Oneself in the Garden

In the fast-paced modern life, this “garden” provides precious “leisure time and space,” allowing viewers to reorganize themselves through looking and feeling, establishing new relationships with the world. The exhibition responds to contemporary people’s deep need for spiritual comfort and inner peace.
