The 1970s was the peak of industrial area development in Hong Kong and has declined since the 1990s. These areas may be overlooked but have never been abandoned; their usage become more diverse and witnessed the city’s evolution. “Hidden Town” presents stories and aesthetics that line within industrial buildings.

What it matters?
WURE AREA is an independent area based in the Kowloon Industrial Area; it inspired LAU Tung-Pui, the founder of PhotoStory, to hold an exhibition to explore the features of these industrial districts. Rabbit Ho and Hiuman Lam are invited to discover stories and details behind the industrial buildings. They both captured the industrial buildings with their expertise and unique photography styles. They explored the diversity and energy of the industrial areas to audiences.

3 Highlights:
- Two local photographers captured external and internal perspectives of industrial buildings in Hong Kong. This technique is inspired by the photobook “City of Darkness Revisited” by photographer Greg Girard and architect Ian Lambot. Rabbit Ho captured the appearance of industrial architecture and inserted cartoon bunny patterns in his works. Audiences are invited to explore the overlooked details of buildings as a game to find out the rabbit. Hiuman Ho disclosed that the internal part of the industrial buildings embodied the connection between people and buildings and the adaptability of the buildings.

- The exhibition draws the audience’s attention to industrial buildings’ features and hidden corners, such as the weathered wall, unique pattern of iron gates and balcony-like corridors in government industrial buildings. Combined with Rabbit Ho’s unique rabbit pattern in his works, interacts with audiences through “hide-and-seek” games. It highlights the distinctive elements of industrial architecture. The exhibition venue also refers to the exhibition’s subject as works are hidden in corner spaces. It encourages audiences to appreciate the details and aged textures of buildings.

- The lyrics of a local band inspire the exhibition’s title and aim to reflect the vitality of industrial buildings. We can observe the unique shops and activities inside the buildings, such as antique stores and hand-painted porcelain factories. In contrast with time-worn appearances, humans give new life to these buildings and bring energy to spaces. Traditional hand craftsmanship can still be discovered in buildings. Audiences can immerse themselves in the slow-down and leisure atmosphere through works. Industrial buildings are not just related to busy factories or dilapidated storehouses, but rather places of stillness in the rapidly changing world.
