LISTENING TO CANTOPOP THROUGH ART

Every song is a form of art. Hong Kong artist Apple Wong Hiu Fung join hands with illustrator Goodbye Victoria, merging Cantonese songs with art to create an exhibition wholly dedicated to Cantopop. The two selected various songs, using lyrics as inspiration, producing twenty acrylic paintings and digital art.

Songs presented by the works include “迴光物語” by Jer Lau,the theme song of  Ossan’s Love “突如其來的心跳感覺”, “回到中學的暑假” by my little airport, “Eighteen” by Beyond and “燕尾蝶” by Shine. The art exhibition will be displayed in the form of “Guess the song”, the title of each artwork will be shown below as a form of hint for the song. On the other side of the painting, a QR code will be provided for the audience to scan and reveal the answer to the related song.

Lately, Cantopop has regained its popularity, and the star-chasing culture has gradually become a common trend in Hong Kong. Apple started to present her favorite songs or poems with paintings in 2013. She grew up listening to Cantopop but later switched to songs from Taiwan and Mainland artists. Therefore, her past works are mainly non-local songs. Until recent years, she met Goodbye Victoria, an illustrator who listens to the radio and Cantopop every day. The two exchanged their playlists because they just happened to work in the same studio. She gradually returned to the embrace of Cantopop which triggered her to plan this very exhibition.
