On July 14th, the London Sotheby’s European & British Art Sale officially ended with flying colors. It showcased the depth of artistic creativity across Britain and Europe during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The star of the sale is Harald Sohlberg’s 1911 watercolor Winter Night in the Mountains, this watercolor offered at Sotheby’s sold for GBP £1,346,000, against a pre-sale estimate of between GBP £800,000 and GBP £1,200,000.

This masterpiece is recently recognized as Norway’s national painting. The original oil painting was chosen in 1995 during a public vote and organized by the Norwegian national broadcasting service. On the other hand, highlights by British artists are also included such as a rediscovered study of an Italian girl by Frederic, Lord Leighton in the 1870s.
