During the COVID-19 pandemic when almost everywhere was locked down and overseas travel was virtually impossible, photographer Wing Chan used previously taken images to seek the dynamic energy of New York, Paris and Hong Kong. Remembering everyday objects and neglected city images, he transforms graffiti, discarded materials and signages into individual artworks of vitality. His latest Urban-Graphis series is now showcased at SHOUT gallery.

“In ‘Urban-Graphics’, I endeavor to create optical poetry, in which a single subject of interest (found in an urban environment) is interwoven with itself multiple times or positioned in such a way to become something completely alien to itself. Reflecting the nature of urban cities, these urgent and bold pieces invite the viewer to rethink their indifference about these often-overlooked aspects of urban society and to find beauty and unpredictability in surroundings that are otherwise stationary and formulaic. No matter it in Hong Kong, Paris, Seoul, Tokyo or any other cities, you can immerse yourself in the mood of this visual music,” said Chan.

“Culling my symbolic impressions buried deep in the memory. I use my digital canvas to bring them to life. By editing and distorting the images and then adding and subtracting details and colours, my form of abstraction is a personal metaphor relevant to today’s living. Somehow my images seem to take over and go beyond my initial concept of reality and become a form of improvisation.”

“To me, New York City is for dreamers and doers. The city is an empty canvas with endless possibilities, the kind of city which embeds itself in you. Once you have lived there, you carry it with you forever. In many ways, Hong Kong is like that too. These are my towns, my homes and they always will be,” explains Chan

Born in Hong Kong, Wing Chan left for the United States when he was 18 and had an award-winning career in commercial design in New York City. In 2011, Chan returned to his roots in Hong Kong to focus on his photography and photomontage. Chan uses photomontage for a wide range of artistic expression that is more grounded in contemporary arts than in photography. His photomontages reflect a fusion of pop art, street art and graffiti iconography. The images dance with the rhythms of bold colours and rich texture. Although his creations are two-dimensional, they transcend reality to lend a great depth and movement to the work. Chan has held exhibitions of his photomontage work in Paris, Tokyo, Kyoto, Kobe, Seoul, Hong Kong, Bangkok, New York, and Singapore. He has also conducted numerous Art Talks.
