Painter Jean-Paul Riopelle was among the first Canadian artists to achieve international fame and recognition. Born in 1923, he studied in Montreal at the École des Beaux Arts and the École de Meuble during the 1940s. During his studies, he became associated with the group of Canadian painters known as Les Automatistes, a group adjacent to the Surrealists that rebuked establishment, tradition and religious authority, favoring instead the subconscious as the driving force behind nonfigurative painting. He traveled to France after the end of World War II, where he lived with the American painter Joan Mitchell. Their work from the 1960s, especially, shows their mutual influence on each other.

A.R. 彭克 | A.R. Penck

A.R. 彭克(A.R.

Born Ralf Winkler in 1939 in Dresden, A.R. Penck is considered a Neo-Expressionist and best known for his paintings and sculptures characterized by simplified figures and forms, and neo-primitive symbols and patterns. His interest lay in the development of a pictorial language based on a simple system of signs, which it would be possible for everyone to decode. The result was a radical reduction in form to a series of outlined stick figures, which he called “Standart”, in reference to the signals associated with commonly known standard symbols. He achieved an abstraction of complex, socio-economic situations in flat, pictorial compositions infused with symbolism.

André Brasilier is a French painter, born in Saumur, France, who studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Art in Paris. In 1952, he received the Florence Blumenthal Award and the Prix de Rome for painting the following year. He resided at the villa Medicis in Rome from 1954 to 1957. He now lives and works in Paris. He creates canvasses that are a blend of abstraction, expressionism, and something distinctly his own. His works often feature themes and motifs like horses, nature, music, and women and more particularly his wife and muse, Chantal. In an intimate communion with nature, he draws his inspiration from its language, sounds, and colors, thus revealing the natural beauty of our surroundings.

After fine arts studies in China, he moved to France in 1988 and enrolled at the Ecole nationale supérieure des beaux- arts in Paris. Xiao-Min was later invited to teach at the same prestigious institution. His artworks show a mastery of colour and capacity for manipulating brushstrokes with a graceful and powerful, poetic spirit, akin to the works of Chinese masters Zao Wou- ki and Chu Teh-Chun, with whom he worked closely to perfect his art form. Xiao-Min has also published a number of books on painting and calligraphy and many of his works now illustrated the pages of French school manuals. 曹星熙 | Cho Sung-Hee

Cho Sung-Hee was born in 1949 in Korea. In constructing the surface of her works, Sung-Hee uses a collage method in which many circles are hand-cut or gently torn from traditional “hanji” paper, then layered with oil pigments and placed one atop another. Sung-Hee successfully combines a traditional Korean sensibility with her unique vision and personal narrative. Her works explore the complex relationship between colour and texture through a labour intensive, time-consuming process. Her works have been exhibited in various prestigious private and public institutions including Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, Sejong Art Centre in Seoul, Telentine Art Centre in Chicago, L.A. Korea Cultural Service, Los Angeles, New York Cultural Service, Mutual Saving and Finance Company in Seoul and Domino Foods, Inc, New York.
