HK-JP-SG said YES.

It is the 25th year of the Generation N, in the age of rapid development of society and technology, face-to-face communication became not as natural, yet the power of technology also unites the people during this critical period of time. Regardless of nationality, regardless of language.

Language is no longer an obstacle or an excuse for inefficient communication, instead, it is the attitude and mentality to listen, the willingness to imagine the possibility of understanding in a different perspective. A group of artists are willing to demonstrate a new possibility of communication in the form of art.
Art is not a literal language, yet its power is significant, because people who appreciate art are willing to be the passive side, and listen to the messages that the creators want to deliver. This group of artists wish to use their influence, to affiliate people, groups, nations, countries, and all discrepancies.

Tai Kwun Contemporary is currently in collaboration with National Museum of Art (Osaka) and Singapore Art Museum to launch an online exhibition “They Do Not Understand Each Other”, and independent exhibition by Tai Kwun “My Bold Holds Its Shape”. Regardless where we are geographically, we can have access to these meaningful artworks easily online!

Tsubata Kato, “They Do Not Understand Each Other”, 2014, Video and Lambda Print

First of all, the exhibition title “They Do Not Understand Each Other” is in fact referenced to Tsubata Kato’s work of the same title. Two monolingual men of different language are invited to a politically controversial island between the border of South Korea and Japan, and they were asked to install a wooden flag onto the island collaboratively. Even though they were struggling to deliver their words literally, yet the collaborative spirit is what matter and what lead to their success.

Ming Wong, “In Love for the Mood”, 2009, Video

There are more artists from different places included in this exhibition, being experimental with different media and cultural exchange. Ming Wong’s “In Love for the Mood” recreated a famous scene from the iconic Hong Kong film “In the Mood for Love” by Wong Kar-wai, but with a pair of Westerner actors instead. The actors were instructed with the original Cantonese dialogues.

Now, during this time of indoor lives, we can visit the exhibitions freely online. Tai Kwun launched virtual gallery version online, users can look into the information and contents of artworks with simple operations, and you can almost stand on any corner of the space. The website even provided VR version of the virtual galleries, providing the users with advanced experience of gallery visit!

The keywords for “They Do Not Understand Each Other” could be “communication” and “interaction”; the keywords for “My Body Holds Its Shape” would be “limits” and “constraints”.
“The bird fights its way out of the egg. The egg is the world. Who would be born must first destroy a world. The bird flies to God. That God’s name is Abraxas.” — Quote by Hermann Hesse in Demian; for one to grow, it is a necessary process to break the inherent frames and norms; it might tremble your world, but it is the process and evidence of growth and development.

The exhibition “My Body Holds Its Shape” included exhibits by 5 artists, presented in various medias including sculpture, photographs, narratives with songs, body movements, and escape route.

Eisa Jocson,《
Eisa Jocson, “Zoo”, 2020, Durational Performance

Eisa Jocson is a choreographer, dancer, and visual artist from Manila. In her durational performance, she is a representation of entertainer in any form. All the set formulas and calculation behind entertainment makes the happiness and joy the consequence of a formula, without accident, without surprise.

Thea Djordjadze, <.pullherawaypull>,2020,

As we are walking into the venue as an audience, in this area of space, we have no difference with the exhibits on the walls or on the floor. The meaning of art is the representative example of a subjective existence. Just like how the venue used to be a female prison, now it is turned into a space of discussion regarding “constrains” and limits. The physical space itself is meaningless, instead, the meaning is given by the subjective values placed by the creators and audiences.
