Brought to you by the same artist of “Our Vantage”, @harcourtromanticist’s the latest artwork, “Justice in Compromise” takes on a modern remake of the famous artwork “The Execution of Lady Jane Grey” by Paul Hippolyte Delaroche which depicts the moments preceding the execution of Lady Jane Grey who was the Queen of England for nine days. @harcourtromanticist plays with the original elements and remakes them into powerful symbols alluding to the critique of corruption and death of freedom in Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong riot police and Carrie Lam depicted in black with tainted, bloody hands are the main figures of corruption and violence. While the remade Lady Justice symbolises a suppressed Hong Kong who represents the injustice Hong Kong is facing. @harcourtromanticist gives new meaning to the three symbolic elements of Lady Justice: her Scales of Justice are askew, she is blindfolded and silenced to vividly illustrate her powerlessness and injustice. The bloody doves, a symbol of peace, is a metaphor to the coercion of Hong Kong officials who destroyed the peace of Hong Kong. The absence of blood on Justice suggest that the bloodshed was not caused by her, but rather by Hong Kong officials, deeming their actions injustice. Thus, the execution of Lady Jane Grey is alluded to the execution and demise of justice in Hong Kong.
