GARDENS AS MAPS OF CULTURE

It is not an overstatement to claim artificial environments as cultural artifacts as the history of human creations begun along with the building of a manmade environment. This is apparent in both the process of economically exploiting nature and the sophisticated manipulation of garden design. Para Site presents a large-scale group exhibition, “Garden of Six Seasons”, that gathers works of global artists to explore the history of human creations, including map-making, medicinal studies and garden designs as cultural artifacts. “Garden of Six Seasons” opens from 16 May (Saturday) to 30 August (Sunday) and will act as a precursor to the Kathmandu Triennale 2020.

Mirroring the Kathmandu Triennale 2020, “Garden of Six Seasons” takes place across multiple venues, Para Site’s two floors and a larger exhibition space at Soho House Hong Kong, which expands the narrative while increasing its accessibility. Reaching out to a wider community and audience, Para Site will curate a series of digital programmes alongside the exhibition which include a VR viewing room, video tours and live panel discussions with the curator and exhibiting artists. For details of further programming, please visit Para Site’s website: https://www.para-site.art/

The exhibition brings together multiple aesthetic and cosmological lineages active today and discusses appropriate frameworks for their understanding, including paubha painting in Nepal, or ink in East Asia, as well as other languages marginalised by a Eurocentric canon. Looking beyond these dominant art canons, the exhibition also includes a genealogy of map-making, from the depiction of the whole universe to the inner human body (sometimes in the same map), instruments for navigating the Earth and healing the body. Garden of Six Seasons is crucially interested in indigenous knowledge that is active and subversive, working towards the upending of patriarchal structures and dominant national frameworks, creating a new global solidarity of places and communities of resistance.
