The University Museum and Art Gallery (UMAG) of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) honourably presents the Chinese painting exhibition “Tradition to Contemporary: Ink Painting and Artistic Development in 20th-century China”, featuring the influential and well-known ink painting master from Hong Kong, Mainland and abroad. The featured masters do not only have helped to build the Hong Kong art scene, but also have contributed to the foundation of UMAG. Most permanent collections were the gifts from the artists or their descendants, witnessing the development of UMAG. The history of featured artwork span across the 20th century, some of which are seldom or never publicly exhibited.
All in all, the chronological arrangements of the paintings offer the audience a glimpse of the Chines ink painting development in the 20th century, introducing the significant masters and the transition of their styles. The themes of the ink paintings cover from Old Hong Kong landscape, flower-bird and mountain paintings. The largest exhibit is “Mount Huang at Dawn” created by Liu Hai-su, which was made after Liu climbed the Mountain Huang for the ninth time at the age of eighty-seven. His works emphasize the observation on nature and demonstrate his unique blending of Western and Chinese techniques on ink.
