Precious coral is both a form of deep-sea life and a material rich in symbolic meaning within jewelry arts. L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts is presenting Precious Coral, from Curiosity to Treasures at its Hong Kong campus, bringing together around 120 coral jewelry creations and rare specimens. Through the perspectives of biology and gemology, craftsmanship, and jewelry art history, the exhibition invites audiences to rediscover coral’s many identities between nature and culture. Alongside the exhibition, the October Magic Hour literature programme offers another entry point into the imagination and symbolism of precious coral.

WHY IT MATTERS
For thousands of years, precious coral has been worn, traded, carved and revered, yet it has often been mistaken for a mineral or a plant. Precious Coral, from Curiosity to Treasures begins with this misconception, reminding visitors that coral is in fact a marine animal, and invites them to reconsider its many identities between nature and jewelry arts.

Descending from Sea Level to the Deep Sea
The exhibition opens with an immersive experience that simulates a descent from sea level to 2,000 metres beneath the ocean. Visitors enter a dimmed space that evokes the quiet deep sea where precious coral grows. Raw and polished coral branches are displayed alongside maps showing known coral beds, helping audiences understand the difference between precious coral and reef coral.

Beyond the Exhibition: Coral and the Cabinet of Curiosities
Alongside the exhibition, L’ÉCOLE also presents the adult masterclass Cabinet of Curiosities – Precious Coral, inviting participants to step into the world of early collectors and explore the history of the wunderkammer. Combining a lecture with a guided exhibition tour, the programme reveals how Renaissance collecting culture brought together art, science and oceanic wonders, while echoing the scenography of Precious Coral, from Curiosity to Treasures.

From Coral Branch to Jewel: Polishing and Carving
The second chapter focuses on how precious coral is transformed from a natural material into jewelry and art objects. Through polishing and carving, coral branches become beads, inlays, sculptures and jewels. Behind each object lies the patience and precision of craftsmanship.

Coral in Chinese Literature: Extending the Exhibition Through Words
As an extension of the exhibition, Coral in Chinese Literature will take place on 3 October. Contemporary writer Wong Yi and Ann Lee, Exhibition Co-curator, Gemologist and L’ÉCOLE Lecturer, will lead a literary conversation on coral, moving between classical Chinese poetry and modern prose to explore how coral has appeared as a symbol of love, nobility and mystery across cultural narratives.
