Colourful illustrations do not have to remain only within the realm of childlike playfulness. Taiwanese illustrator and picturebook creator Gayo (Instagram: @gayodoodle) uses playful lines and vibrant colours to quietly place questions about confidence, life, interpersonal relationships and memories of place into images and picturebooks. At first glance, her works appear bright in colour and innocent in style, yet beneath their cute surfaces, they often leave space for slow reflection.

Gayo Lin is a Taiwanese illustrator and picturebook creator. Her images are often built through bright colour blocks, gentle lines and imaginative characters. Rather than moving viewers through complex plots, her illustrations often feel like moments where we are invited to pause. We may first be drawn in by their vivid colours, before slowly noticing the delicate emotions hidden beneath the surface.

For example, In LIFE, she uses pencil, colour pencil and crayon to reflect on life and death. What makes the work special is that it does not present death in an overly heavy way. Instead, it uses visual languages connected to everyday life, dreams, weather and emotion, making an abstract question feel more intimate and approachable. Through soft lines, layered colours and quiet details, death is not only presented as an ending, but also as an entry point for understanding life, time and possibility.

Perhaps what makes Gayo’s work most moving is the way she turns playfulness into a gentle form of thinking. Her colours are not simply cute decorations, and her characters are not only innocent figures. Instead, they become small openings that invite viewers to stop and look more closely. As we enter her colourful visual world, we may find that the questions hidden within colours, lines and characters quietly lead us back to how we understand ourselves, others and our relationship with the world.
