把藝術帶回家:《Snapshots》坪洲青年藝術展的15元公益實驗|ART TO GO: SNAPSHOTS TURNS YOUTH CREATIVITY INTO COMMUNITY ACTION

Drop three HK$5 coins into a vending machine and take home a watercolour print of a Hong Kong snack—Snapshots brings youth creativity, interactive art and community action together in Peng Chau.

WHY IT MATTERS

Led independently by a group of local teenage artists, the charity exhibition Snapshots is now taking place at Storytelling Coffee in Peng Chau. Featuring physical artworks by Aahana Mukhi, Victoria Lee, Audrey Lee, Sophie Lee and Lokyi Ko, the exhibition explores everyday experiences of nature, travel, culture and identity, preserving fleeting moments as painted “snapshots”. More than an exhibition to simply look at, the project also connects art-making with direct community support. Working with the Society for Community Organization (SoCO), the youth organisers are donating all profit to community initiatives.

Three Coins, One Piece of Art

The exhibition’s most eye-catching interactive feature is an automated art print vending machine conceptualised, assembled and managed by student artist Aahana Mukhi. Inspired by the “art vending machine” videos that have gained popularity across global social media, she brings the idea to Hong Kong as her own grassroots art experiment. By inserting three HK$5 coins, visitors can purchase an original watercolour print featuring Hong Kong snacks for just HK$15. Instead of remaining something viewed only on a gallery wall, art becomes something visitors can interact with and physically take home.

Turning Fleeting Moments into Snapshots

The title Snapshots reflects the shared approach of the five young creatives. Through different media, Aahana Mukhi, Victoria Lee, Audrey Lee, Sophie Lee and Lokyi Ko capture observations of travel, nature, culture and personal experience. A journey, a place, a cultural impression or simply a fleeting scene can all become a “snapshot” worth preserving.

Grassroots Art for Social Good

Snapshots is a completely zero-budget, grassroots student initiative, yet its ambitions extend beyond the exhibition itself. The youth organisers have partnered directly with the Society for Community Organization (SoCO), turning proceeds from their creative work into support for the wider community. All profits from the HK$15 prints, together with a portion of artwork sales, go towards SoCO’s community initiatives for low-income children.

Art Beyond the White Cube

Rather than taking place in a conventional gallery, Snapshots is hosted at Storytelling Coffee in Peng Chau. With free admission, visitors can encounter youth art naturally as part of an island walk or coffee break, while the vending machine adds a playful and accessible layer of interaction. Its small-scale and independent format also suggests that a cultural project does not always require a large production. A group of young creatives, a community space and one simple idea can already become a starting point for art to meet the public.

Snapshots is independently driven by a group of local teenage creatives. From making the artworks and organising the exhibition to developing the interactive installation and charity partnership, the project has grown directly from the students’ own ideas.
