What if aliens are not descending from the sky, but have already been hiding in security checkpoints, departure lounges and restrooms? Could you still board your next flight as if nothing had happened? American artist Barminski builds a full-scale cardboard airport, guiding visitors through familiar airport routines and slowly into a journey filled with conspiracy and humor.

推介原因 WHY IT MATTERS

繼2023年於香港舉行的展覽「Moon Lands On Man」後，美國藝術家 Barminski 再度回到 JPS Gallery，帶來全新沉浸式裝置展覽「51 號跑道 (Runway 51)」。這一次，他將畫廊改造成一座全紙皮打造的機場，讓觀眾親身穿梭於安檢站、候機大樓、機場精品店和洗手間之間。作為現代交通、地緣政治與邊界管制的象徵，機場在 Barminski 的手中成為外星人的舞台。展覽不只是一場有趣的星際旅程，也引導觀眾從熟悉的日常系統出發，重新思考未知和人類自身的位置：外星人或許並非從遙遠的他方前來，而是早已潛伏在我們信任的系統裡。

Following his 2023 Hong Kong exhibition Moon Lands On Man, American artist Barminski returns to JPS Gallery with his new immersive installation exhibition, Runway 51. This time, he transforms the gallery into a full-scale airport made entirely of cardboard, allowing visitors to move through a security checkpoint, departure hall, airport select shop and restroom. As a symbol of modern travel, geopolitics and border control, the airport becomes, in Barminski’s hands, a stage for alien encounters. More than a playful intergalactic journey, the exhibition invites visitors to begin with familiar everyday systems and reconsider the unknown, as well as humanity’s place within it: perhaps aliens are not arriving from a distant elsewhere but have already been hiding within the systems we trust.

重點一覽 HIGHLIGHTS

1️⃣ 紙皮機場：日常登機程序的偏航 CARDBOARD AIRPORT: WHEN DAILY TRAVEL DRIFTS INTO OUTER SPACE

Barminski 將 JPS Gallery 變成一座 1:1 比例的「紙皮機場」，以粗獷黑線和鮮明色塊重塑安檢、候機、購物和洗手間等熟悉場景。觀眾踏入其中，彷彿一時間分不清自己是走進了畫廊，還是來到一座機場。在紙皮搭建的航廈中，這趟旅程逐漸偏離現實航道，而觀眾將親身進入奇想旅程。

Barminski transforms JPS Gallery into a 1:1 “cardboard airport”, recreating familiar scenes such as security check, waiting areas, shopping spaces and restrooms with bold black lines and vivid blocks of colour. As visitors step inside, they may momentarily wonder whether they have entered a gallery or arrived at an airport. Within this cardboard terminal, the journey gradually drifts away from reality, inviting visitors to personally enter a world of imagination.

2️⃣ 安檢站裡的外星人：初嘗「第三類接觸」ALIENS AT SECURITY: YOUR FIRST CLOSE ENCOUNTER

展覽第一站是全紙皮打造的安檢站。不過，站在輸送帶旁邊的不是普通地勤，而是一位外星人。但原本應該驚心動魄的「外星接觸」，在這裡只是掃描、檢查和交出隨身物品的日常。

The first station is a full-scale cardboard security checkpoint. Yet the figure beside the conveyor belt is not an ordinary airport worker, but an extraterrestrial transit officer. What should be a dramatic “close encounter” becomes a familiar routine of scanning, inspection and surrendering personal belongings.

3️⃣ 把「陰謀論」買回家：宇宙未知變成機場商品 TAKING THE CONSPIRACY HOME: WHEN THE UNKNOWN BECOMES MERCHANDISE

經過安檢後，觀眾將進入候機大樓與機場商店。紙皮座椅、手繪航班顯示屏，以及擺滿原創雕塑的貨架，這裡彷彿一個星際版的機場商店。畢竟，即使遇上外星人，購物還是不能停的。這些商品看似普通的流行文化紀念品，卻也像是隱藏真相的碎片，讓現實與未知、商品與展品之間的界線變得模糊。

After passing through security, visitors enter the departure lounge and airport select shop. With cardboard seating, hand-painted flight boards and shelves filled with original sculptures, the space feels like an intergalactic version of an airport store, even alien encounters cannot stop the urge to shop. These items may look like ordinary pop-culture souvenirs, but they also appear as fragments of hidden truths, blurring the line between reality and the unknown, merchandise and exhibits.

4️⃣ 銀河邊緣的洗手間：當鏡子不再照出自己 RESTROOM AT THE EDGE OF THE GALAXY: WHEN THE MIRROR NO LONGER REFLECTS YOU

旅程在洗手間還迎來超現實的驚喜轉折。洗手盆上方的鏡子照出的不是觀眾的臉，而是一片遙遠的星系。熟悉的自我倒影消失後，「我是世界中心」的安穩感也被深邃宇宙取代。Barminski 以一個簡單動作，將洗手間的鏡子變成觀看宇宙的入口，邀請觀眾重新思考自己在巨大未知之中的位置。

The journey takes a surreal and surprised turn in the restroom. Above the sinks, the mirrors do not reflect the viewer’s face but reveal a distant galaxy. As the familiar reflection disappears, the comforting idea of being at the centre of existence also fades. With one simple gesture, Barminski turns a restroom mirror into an entrance to cosmic perspective, inviting visitors to reconsider their place within the vast unknown.

5️⃣ 暗門之後：外星人是入侵者，還是老朋友？ BEHIND THE HIDDEN DOOR: INVADERS OR OLD FRIENDS?

在展覽的最後，一道隱藏暗門帶領觀眾進入介於監控室與地下檔案庫之間的密室。螢幕播放着平行時間線與歷史碎片，從金字塔、巨石陣到復活島石像，透露着外星力量似乎早已滲入人類文明。在這裡，外星人不是入侵者，似乎更像是陪伴人類歷史已久、賜予人類智慧的「老朋友」。

At the end of the exhibition, a hidden door leads visitors into a secret room between a surveillance chamber and an underground archive. Screens show parallel timelines and fragments of history, from the pyramids and Stonehenge to the Moai statues of Easter Island. It suggests that alien forces may have long been part of the human civilisation. Here, aliens are not invaders, but “old friends” who seem to have accompanied human history and even shared wisdom with mankind.

Barminski（美國，1962年生）是一位多媒體藝術家，創作橫跨繪畫、互動媒體與平面設計。他以紙板重塑日常物件而聞名，經常將鞋子、噴漆罐、家具等平凡物品轉化為近似立體繪畫的雕塑。他的創作主要探討消費主義、廣告文化與大眾傳媒對個人生活的影響，並以幽默而帶有批判性的方式，回應現代消費文化與社會發展。

Barminski (United States, b. 1962) is a multimedia artist whose practice spans painting, interactive media and graphic design. He is best known for recreating everyday objects in cardboard, transforming ordinary items such as shoes, spray cans and furniture into three-dimensional sculptures with a drawing-like quality. His work mainly explores consumerism, advertising culture and the influence of mass media on personal life. Through humor and a critical eye, he offers important reflections on modern consumer culture and social development.
