If one day you walk into a dessert shop and find a panda hiding inside a s’more, pretending to be the melted marshmallow, and three little pink pigs piled on top of a stack of pink macarons, fast asleep – don’t question if you’re just too hungry. You’ve simply stepped into the world of Japanese illustrator tt.tohto.
Japanese illustrator t.t. (Instagram: @tt.tohto) specialises in depicting “small worlds hidden within small things”. Using warm colours and delicate brushstrokes, she cleverly combines soft, fragrant desserts with cute animals to create a series of sweet and playful illustrations. Her works don’t rely on complex narratives – yet they capture your attention immediately, because those cats hiding in cakes and bears curled up on sushi are simply impossible to ignore.

In her work, animals don’t just stay as animals – they sneak into the food. A panda sprawls on a s’more, pretending to be the melted marshmallow. A brown bear balances an eggplant’s green stem on its head, trying to pass as a vegetable. A cat curls up like a rice ball and dozes off on a piece of sushi. And a polar bear? He’s simply enjoying a warm bath in a bowl of red bean porridge. Each illustration feels like a playful game of hide-and-seek, leaving you wondering: should I take a bite first, or a hug?

t.t.’s inspiration comes from everyday life – an afternoon dessert, a passing cat, a patch of sunlight on the table. She transforms these ordinary moments into warm scenes under her brush, allowing viewers to rediscover the small joys they often overlook. This ability to turn the everyday into fairy tales is what makes t.t.’s work so captivating.

In November 2024, t.t. released her first publication – “t.t.’s Cat Hide-and-Seek Postcard Book”, published by Orange Page in Japan. Opening this postcard book feels like stepping into a game of hide-and-seek between delicious food and cats. A cat peeks out from the edge of a loaf of bread, another hides its tail between a stack of pastries, and a third curls up in the gap between fruit and a plate, quietly watching you. Every page is a little surprise waiting to be discovered – and when you find it, you can’t help but smile: “Found you!”

From 10 January to 6 March 2026, t.t.’s original merchandise was available at LOFT stores across Japan. The lineup includes memo pads, clear files, acrylic key holders, and stickers – each piece feels like a small surprise that has jumped out of her illustrations. The designs retain t.t.’s signature warmth – the cute animals are still hiding in stationery and small goods, waiting to be found.

t.t.’s illustrations are never in a hurry. They wait quietly for you to find them, to smile, and to think – hey, maybe today isn’t so bad after all. She once said that she hopes her work can become a small breather in people’s busy lives. And she has indeed achieved that – when you look at those animals hiding in desserts, you can’t help but slow down and smile.
Find a quiet afternoon, brew a cup of tea, and open t.t.’s Instagram – you’ll discover that life is full of sweet little surprises waiting to be found.
