WATERCOLOUR HONG KONG: A TAIWANESE ARTIST’S LOVE LETTER TO THE CITY

From Keelung to Hong Kong, from unfamiliar to familiar – Taiwanese artist Wang Chieh spent six months and made three trips, capturing Hong Kong through his eyes with watercolour and pen. This is not just an exhibition, but a Taiwanese perspective’s affectionate gaze upon this city.

WHY IT MATTERS

Taiwanese artist Wang Chieh presents his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, “Watercolour Hong Kong”, from 3 to 27 June 2026 at Touch Gallery in Tai Kwun, Central. A PhD graduate in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona, he currently teaches at Taipei National University of the Arts. Specialising in watercolour and Western calligraphy, he has published multiple books and was selected for the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

At the end of 2025, Wang Chieh accepted an invitation to step away from his familiar surroundings and capture his perspective of Hong Kong. Over six months, he made three trips – navigating transport, seeking out food, gradually getting to know neighbourhoods, and making painting friends. His images shifted from hesitant to vivid.

He said: “I cannot say whether I arrived too early or too late, but one thing I know for certain: from this Taiwanese perspective, I have left behind a colourful trail of my own within the city’s ever-turbulent flow.”
