CITY RECORD: SZI’S EVERYDAY WARMTH IN WATERCOLOUR AND INK

Most of us know what a city looks like. But the same street corner can feel completely different depending on who you are and what you’ve lived through. Let’s take a quiet walk with SZI – through the old shops of Taipei’s Chifeng Street, the letterpress plates at Zhiwen Binding House, the blue-painted balconies of Wan Chai’s Blue House, and the clatter of trams on Johnston Road. Her brush invites us to slow down and remember the small moments that make up a life.

SZI is a Taiwanese artist who sketches the cities she wanders through. Her style is gentle and unpretentious – fresh, delicate watercolours and clean pen lines that never shout for attention but somehow hold yours for a long time.

In the autumn of 2024, she held a solo exhibition called “Impression of Chifeng Street” at Red Space on that very street. Once a noisy lane of blacksmiths and hardware stores, Chifeng Street today is a mix of old and new – a designer café next to a traditional shop, a vintage printing press tucked behind a modern storefront. SZI’s paintings feel like a quiet conversation between then and now.

Her sketchbook has also made its way to Hong Kong. The Blue House in Wan Chai, the trams rattling down Johnston Road, the Star Ferry Pier in Tsim Sha Tsui – in her work, these aren’t tourist postcards. They’re everyday scenes with the small marks of life still on them. She once said that sketching isn’t about making a perfect picture. It’s about holding onto how a moment felt.

Beyond traveling in person, SZI often joins “Google Street View sketching gatherings” – artists use Google Street View to “travel” to a corner of the world online, then sketch it. The Douro riverfront in Porto, Baker Street in London, a sunlit restaurant in Spain’s Balearic Islands – all of them came to life on her sketchbook this way. Whether she’s using a fine liner pen or layering watercolours, she has a way of catching what makes a place feel like itself.

“I record fragments of emotion and memory through lines.”

Short and simple, but it says everything. Let’s learn from her art – and then start gathering our own fragments.
