Roberto Giacomucci: The Architect of Living Materials

Roberto Giacomucci

Roberto Giacomucci redefines modern design by turning ordinary materials and rigid industrial media into lively sculptural works that balance art and utility. Through tech-infused craft and natural biomimicry, he unites industrial production with artisanal warmth, making sustainable democratic design vivid and accessible.

Roberto Giacomucci is a celebrated Italian architect and designer based in Ancona who treats design as a soulful lifestyle rather than just a career. With a background as an Art Director for renowned brands like Kubedesign and a professor of architecture, his work has earned him top-tier accolades like the Good Design Award. He is often called an “artisan of design” because he bridges the gap between high-end industrial production and the intimate, hands-on feel of a craftsman’s workshop.

His aesthetic is a playful mix of irony and practicality, where he transforms everyday objects into modern, eco-friendly statements. Giacomucci is a master of materials; he is equally comfortable working with sustainable honeycomb cardboard as he is with liquid metals, Carrara marble, or transparent acrylics. His style often plays with the balance of “solids and voids,” ensuring that while his pieces look like sculptural art, they remain functional and accessible for real-world use.

A pioneer in the “democratic design” movement, he was one of the first to prove that recyclable materials like cardboard could be used to create sophisticated, load-bearing furniture. More recently, his work has leaned into a “cellular” or cosmic trend, using textures that mimic microscopic organisms or chemical reactions. This focus on sustainability and biomimicry ensures his art feels alive and deeply connected to the natural world, even when produced with high-tech methods.

To bring these visions to life, Giacomucci blends traditional observation with cutting-edge technology. He utilizes 5-axis CNC milling for marble and laser-cutting for metal, but he is perhaps most famous for his “structural origami” with cardboard and his unique acrylic fusion techniques. By layering plates and manipulating the curing process, he creates organic, jellyfish-like effects within plexiglass, turning rigid surfaces into fluid, transparent masterpieces.
