From Urban Elegance to Warrior Majesty

Shieh takes a fearless leap into new artistic territory. His once serene figures, symbolic of Hong Kong’s refined urban essence, now surge forward as armed warriors brandishing ancient weapons with commanding presence. 展覽回味經典，細細品味膠片藝術。是次展覽播映的《關公大戰石家豪》，取材自1976年在台灣上映的電影作品《戰神》。該電影後來被重新修復並改名為《關公大戰外星人》，講述關羽在繁華的香港中環鬧市與外星人激戰連場，其天馬行空的科幻劇情以及略顯老派的主角造型，成功征服眾多流行文化愛好者，成為膠片文化中的代表作。 《關公大戰石家豪》依舊延續膠片風格。影片中，關公與香港的地標建築物展開對決，以大膽而富有新意的手法向昔日的流行文化致敬，同時為藝術文化跨域進入新時代作出意義非凡的探索。

Inspired by a Cult Classic, Reborn for Today

Adding a playful twist, the exhibition channels the offbeat energy of the 1976 Taiwanese cult film “War of God,” famously known as “Guan Yu vs. Aliens.” This wonderfully wild story, featuring the deity battling extraterrestrials in Hong Kong’s bustling Central district, charmed pop culture fans with its audacious imagination. Today, Shieh takes this spirit further, placing Guan Yu in an electric face-off against his own architectural creations — turning the entire exhibition into a bold cultural critique and a triumph of innovative artistry.

背景 BACKGROUND

石家豪以傳統中國工筆技法為繪畫基礎，運用到水墨絹本、塑膠彩畫布和剪紙拼貼上。透過當代視角呈現傳統水墨藝術。石家豪以具象繪畫聞名，擅長用傳統筆觸技巧描繪東亞地區的流行文化，作品中亦不乏香港的成長經歷。以人體為敘事母題，通過風趣幽默的方式探討當代人世的身份議題。其中廣受好評的建築系列，他繪畫的人物穿上度身訂造的香港摩天大樓，令人留下深刻印象。石家豪於香港出生，在香港中文大學取得美術學士和碩士學位。曾於香港及世界各地參與多項展覽，包括1999年在澳洲布里斯本的「第三屆亞太當代藝術三年展」。其作品被世界各地的藝術機構收藏，包括香港藝術館、 香港M+視覺文化博物館、牛津大學阿什莫林博物館及三藩市亞洲藝術博物館等。藝術家現於香港生活和工作。

Wilson Shieh transfers his intricate Chinese fine-brush, gongbi, painting technique to his various media of choice, ranging from ink on silk, acrylic on canvas to paper cutout collage, filtering the traditional Chinese ink painting through a contemporary lens. Best known for his figurative paintings, Wilson uses traditional brushwork techniques to depict themes and narratives derived from the popular culture of East Asia and his immediate environment in Hong Kong. In his acclaimed Architectural Series, he transforms the Hong Kong skyscrapers into figures donning tailor-made costumes. Through his narrative of human bodies, Wilson inquires about the issues of modern identity in an often humorous light. Born in Hong Kong, Wilson earned a Fine Arts BA and MFA degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He participated in numerous local and overseas exhibitions, including the Third Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in Brisbane in 1999. His works are featured in institutional collections worldwide, including Hong Kong Museum of Art; M+ Hong Kong; Ashmolean Museum, Oxford University; and Asian Art Museum, San Francisco. The artist now lives and works in Hong Kong.
