City views are not just a record of life, but also help us with conversing with the city’s “soul”, and think deeply about the social values in our society.

The Deep Observation towards the Society
The gallery’s ground floor will spotlight Wong’s reflections on social tensions triggered by economic and political change. The lanwei series presents a stark photographic study of abandoned, unfinished buildings across China and Asia. More than records of urban decay, these images—often featuring local residents—serve as powerful visual prompts. These images urge viewers to confront the human cost of unchecked economic ambition, and reflect on societal values.

Tranquillity Returns As Human Figures Recede
Replaced by meticulously arranged natural elements in series such as reborn ikebana and i see ikebana. they are ikebana. These compositions, imbued with a sense of serene austerity, echo Hong Kong literary critic Leung Man-tao’s observation of anothermountainman’s ability to harness the essence of Zen Buddhism: to utilise forms to reveal their true nature and, ultimately, dissolve them. This shift is not a departure from Wong’s earlier concerns, but rather a spiritual elevation – a testament to his unwavering commitment to exploring the depths of human experience through the transformative power of art.

The Inspiration from Buddhism
The exhibition focuses on the social and political themes that have shaped Wong’s work over the past two decades. Moreover, it also delves into his spiritual explorations, deeply informed by his conversion to Buddhism.

Born in Hong Kong in 1960, Stanley Wong, also known as “anothermountainman”, is an artist, photographer, f ilm director and designer. He came to internaDonal a enDon with his Red White Blue series which was presented at the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005. The series invited Hong Kong people to search for a new, positive cultural identity in the wake of the 1997 handover. Considered one of today’s most influential creatives in Asia, Wong held leading positions in influential advertising companies before pursuing an artistic career. He was the first Chinese appointed Asia creative director at Bartle Bogle Hegarty, before becoming CEO of TBWA Hong Kong in 1999. During his 15 years in advertising, he masterminded some of the most iconic ad campaigns in the region (e.g. for Levi’s in Japan and the Hong Kong railways). In the early 2000s, he converted to Buddhism and started to create art and design under the pseudonym “anothermountainman”, as a tribute to the 17th-century Chinese painter, calligrapher, and poet Bada Shanren (shanren literal trans. “mountain man”). In 2001, Wong began working on the “Building Hong Kong” project, the most famous component of which was the Red White Blue series. Inspired by the humble red-white blue plastic fabric produced in Hong Kong since the 1960s (ubiquitous in carriage bags, street markets and construction sites), the series was created at a time when negative sentiment was rife in Hong Kong culture. Wong’s signature pattern offered a visual metaphor for resilience, dignity, and grassroots pride. Today, Wong’s work features in leading collections, including the V&A in London, the M+ and several other museums in Hong Kong. His artworks and designs have been shown in over 150 exhibitions across the world, including Art Basel and the Milan Design Week. Wong has also won multiple awards.
