Gallery EXIT presents CHENG Ting Ting’s ‘Amber Steps’. The exhibition delves into the subtle rhythms of daily life, transforming ordinary moments into a lasting painterly language. Cheng focuses on simple, often overlooked rituals that provide calm and clarity, inviting viewers to discover the quiet resonance within our everyday steps.
WHY IT MATTERS
Building on Cheng’s previous work, this new collection explores how small, ordinary moments can be transformed into a painterly language. Cheng examines how simple daily routines, often unnoticed, can provide moments of calm and clarity. These quiet intervals gently create space for self-reflection and creative expression. The theme of the exhibition was inspired by Cheng’s experience with an old-fashioned radio. When the dial isn’t tuned just right, static noise fills the air—but with a slight adjustment, a clear signal emerges. This delicate act of “tuning” reminded Cheng of how she seeks balance in her own life. She began paying attention to her daily habits—preparing breakfast, tidying a room, stretching—small, repetitive actions that gradually became grounding rituals. Like placing a paperweight on a fluttering page, these simple acts help calm the mind.

Title Significance
The exhibition title, ‘Amber Steps’, brings together two ideas. ‘Steps’ represent the rhythms and movements Cheng relies on to find her pace—both physically and mentally. ‘Amber’ suggests something warm and timeless, like light captured in resin. Together, they frame the way Cheng sees the quiet power of daily life: as something slowly built, layered with experience, and quietly luminous.

Exhibition Rhythm and Perspectives
The exhibition flows with a strolling rhythm, reflecting Cheng’s gentle pace and sensitivity to her surroundings. Works such as ‘Lost Pieces’, ‘Pebbles’, ‘Those Flowers in Red’, and ‘Sparklers’ offer different perspectives—from a close look at forgotten objects in a lost-and-found box to the distant glow of sparklers in the night. Each painting reveals Cheng’s ability to find meaning in quiet places.

Memory and Stillness
Other works trace the unexpected resurfacing of memories. ‘Name Forgotten’ and ‘Cruiscation’ draw on hazy recollections—childhood visits to flower shows or modest cruise holidays. These moments, though not dramatic, left soft, lasting impressions. Elsewhere, the rhythm slows: ‘A Nap’ captures a fleeting moment of rest, ‘Idle Paperweights’ evokes the drift of a wandering mind, and ‘Waiting Area’ imagines the stillness of waiting for a return journey.

Everyday Resonance
Cheng’s work reminds us that even the most routine moments carry a quiet resonance. In Amber Steps, her paintings gently gather these fragments of daily life, turning them into something lasting and reflective. Through her careful attention to light, rhythm, and memory, Cheng invites viewers to pause—and to discover the beauty in the ordinary steps that shape our everyday lives.
