How long has it been since you truly stopped to look at a painting?
In this fast-forwarding era, Korean artist Young Lee presses pause for us with her brush. A small dog running through a pink flower field, a rabbit leaping across a green meadow, a sheep standing quietly in golden wheat waves. These quiet yet life-filled moments are exactly the healing our hearts long for.

Her most renowned “Flow” series captures those fleeting moments of movement in life. Young Lee employs bold brushstrokes and rich acrylic paint to create a unique visual language—every stroke on the canvas is full of momentum, as if wind is sweeping across the scene. Green meadows, pink flower fields, golden wheat fields, azure waters… Natural elements transform into waves of flowing color under her brush, while tiny animals become “emotional anchors” in the composition, allowing viewers to find spiritual refuge amidst the flowing colors.

Technically, Young Lee’s work demonstrates precise control of texture and movement. She employs the impasto technique, layering paint on the canvas to create three-dimensional brushstrokes that flow in the same direction, creating a strong visual rhythm. The repetitive linear structure not only unifies the composition but also guides the viewer’s gaze throughout. The small animals positioned at the center or slightly off to one side—whether fluffy dogs, adorable rabbits, or silent sheep—are all rendered with simple brushwork, standing still amidst the flowing colors, forming a striking contrast with the abstract rushing background. This dialogue between “figurative and abstract,” “stillness and motion,” is the most captivating aspect of Young Lee’s work.

Young Lee is also skilled at balancing warm and cool tones. The pink “Flow” series is gentle as a dream, the green-toned works overflow with vitality and hope, while the blue series brings tranquility and contemplation. Notably, she often incorporates multiple color tones within a single composition, creating the illusion of shifting light and shadow through color gradation, making the static canvas seem to breathe as well.

Young Lee
Young Lee’s work reminds us: life flows ceaselessly. We are all like those tiny figures in the painting, sometimes gently embraced by our environment, sometimes facing the vastness of the world alone. And it is precisely because of this flow and uncertainty that each moment is so precious and unique. Standing before her paintings, you’ll quietly enter a state of “flow”— forgetting time and becoming fully immersed in the present moment.
