Where the Light Bends Between Us: A Curated Encounter in Changing Times

Did you know that “[for] every journey, in the end, is a becoming”? “And in the bend of the light, is where we meet.” This is the curatorial statement of Shirky Chan, whose curation undoubtedly reflects such a central idea.

WHY IT MATTERS

Where the Light Bends Between Us is a group exhibition that features the works of five artists from Hong Kong, the UK and Korea: Ashlee Ip, Heyse Ip, Jeremy Ip, Chino Ng and Ido Park. Viewers are to experience an immersive realm where light and shadow intertwine, and explore the space and time in between. The process of change is like a refraction; thresholds are challenged by states of transition.

Heyse Ip

Ip’s latest series focuses on flies, with their familiar buzzing intruding upon everyday life, serving as a constant reminder of their role as a co-habitant in our shared environment. He reimagines the fly as an explorer, reframing the insect not as an intruder, but an accidental mediator, thereby dissolving the fiction of boundaries.

Jeremy Ip

The artist envisions a journey of food entering the human body, constructing a rhythmic space by capturing the fictional moments of beautiful transformation through figurative brushstrokes. By unfolding temperature in colour — cool and warm hues humming against translucent layers, evoking sensory memory — he transmutes process into presence.

Chino Ng

Reflecting on moments where memories and spaces are distorted by light, Ng documents the delicate transition between recollection and imagination. Each work is a doorway to liminal instants — where light is neither simply seen nor remembered, but a transformative threshold.

4️⃣ Ido Park

By experimenting with the tactile texture of wax layered over his oil paintings, the artist imagines the gentle floating process of spores as they spread, settle and germinate. Thousands of unconventional garden landscapes are explored through the endless changes and patterns in life. Drifting pigments mimic wandering cells, crossing borders of identity. These are not depictions of beginnings or endings, but of the space where we are most alive to metamorphosis.

The old Chinese poem Visiting Shanxi Village suggests that amidst recurring roadblocks, another village could emerge out of dark willows and bright flowers. In between brightness and darkness, what are the shades of colours that you can observe? If you may calm down and sit with your thoughts whilst visiting the exhibition, then more unexpected inspirations shall be on their way.
