Have you seen feminist themes in traditional art? Nihonga painter Kaori Someya (born in 1977) answers with gold-leafed women—blending kimono patterns from her artisan mother and scroll-mounting techniques into silent protest. Her gilded figures reflect Japan’s conservatism yet pulse with hidden vitality.

Kaori Someya’s female subjects embody a paradoxical duality—their resolute strength in confronting modern societal pressures belies an undercurrent of profound “loneliness” and “isolation.” Through layered depictions of emotionally inscrutable women intertwined with lifeless butterflies, the artist visually conflates these motifs to underscore the solitary struggles and helplessness imposed by traditional social structures. This deliberate aesthetic strategy lays bare the existential plight of womanhood in contemporary society.

Kori Someya boasts a diverse personal background. She graduated from the Japanese Painting Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1999, and completed her master’s degree in Cultural Property Conservation and Restoration (specializing in Japanese painting restoration) at the university’s Graduate School of Fine Arts in 2002. Subsequently, she remained at the university serving as a part-time lecturer, research assistant, and teaching assistant. During her graduate studies, her work was first selected for the prestigious “In-ten Exhibition,” a public Japanese painting exhibition that values both tradition and innovation. She went on to receive the Incentive Award at the In-ten Exhibition seven times and the Spring In-ten Exhibition Incentive Award five times. Her achievements also include winning the Foreign Minister’s Award at the 2013 Spring In-ten Exhibition and the Adachi Museum Award at the 2018 In-ten Exhibition, ultimately earning her the status of specially recognized member at the Japan Art Institute.

Kaori Someya’s oeuvre primarily focuses on figurative and flower-and-bird subjects, renowned for its profound research into Edo-period Nihonga techniques and materials.
In Accidental Interaction, Kaori Someya poignantly captures the duality of contemporary Japanese womanhood through her depiction of expressionless goldfish and women adrift in water. The suspended figures—both human and piscine—visually articulate the constraints imposed by traditional society, while their continued movement through liquid space suggests quiet perseverance. This symbolic interplay reveals the artist’s nuanced meditation on feminine resilience: though her subjects embody stoic independence, their aqueous isolation simultaneously exposes the latent loneliness and vulnerability beneath this strength.
