In ancient times, artists often had to showcase and share their works in private gatherings, whereas contemporary artists have the opportunity to exhibit in museums, galleries, and exhibition halls. Despite this, many promising artists still face challenges in gaining public exposure and recognition for their works. The “Hong Kong Emerging Artists Exhibition” brings six emerging Hong Kong artists into the public eyes, highlighting their persistence and dedication in the pursuit of art. This exhibition vividly embodies Chinese art and culture, encouraging artists to continue creating and not to be discouraged by temporary difficulties.

3 Highlights:
- The exhibition is rooted in the philosophy of reviving Chinese culture as advocated by Professor Jao Tsung-I. It encourages artists to integrate traditional Chinese elements into their work, revitalising and modernising these cultural expressions. Six artists present their artworks using traditional techniques and motifs to promote Chinese art. William Ho’s artworks presented traditional techniques of Chinese calligraphy, such as “flying-white” and residual brushstrokes. Sliver Qian’s abstract ink art shows her skilful use of the Chinese painting principle of spatial relationships and level distance, brushstrokes such as “cun”. She also included calligraphy in her artworks.

- Six young artists showed their new interpretations of Chinese art and culture innovatively and modernly. Brenda Hui’s watercolour paintings blend with Chinese ink painting elements and skills to create a unique visual experience. The transparency of the watercolour, mixed with expressive spattering ink, highlights the fluidity and dynamic postures of the birds. Cheung Yung Ka is the only ceramic artist in this exhibition; her works present traditional Chinese ‘Xuan Paper’ by ceramics in an innovative way. She replicates and layers the ceramic ‘paper’ to create a realistic, soft, wrinkled texture. Daisy Dai depicts rural landscapes in her watercolour paintings. Each of her artworks also matched with Chinese poems. She blends Eastern aesthetics and poetics with Western techniques, expanding the audience’s viewing field.

- The exhibition also showcases distinct elements of Hong Kong culture by featuring artworks. Kenny Ip depicted watercolour paintings about Hong Kong’s iconic urban landscapes and symbols. He used vibrant and red-colour tones to create the city’s dynamic energy. Elements such as Neon lights, billboards, and minibuses resonate with audiences and bring the audience back to the ‘old Hong Kong’. Daisy Dai depicted Hong Kong streets and rural landscapes in her own style, such as wetlands and stone slabs street. William Ho also integrated his traditional calligraphy style with Cantonese pop songs and modern Hong Kong literature. He inscribes the lyrics of “Goodbye 2-Chome”, a Cantonese pop song, and “Can I Say”, poems from Hong Kong author Xi Xi. He presents the modernity and influence of Hong Kong’s cultural essence.
