Ning Lo: Painting is the salt of life

Ning Lo is an artist based in Taipei, specializing in illustration and graphic design. Her creations predominantly utilize digital painting techniques, drawing inspiration from the life and people around her. Ning Lo excels at capturing the details of everyday life, incorporating her favorite elements and landscapes into her work, and endowing each piece with profound narrative depth. Her artworks often contain elements of Taiwanese local culture, vintage items, and traditional shops, especially evident when meandering through the streets of Xinzhuang, where the local cultural visuals in her works come to life.

Ning describes her career as a gradual journey. After graduating from an animation program, she spent her after-work hours creating art, initially in expressive diaries. A project illustrating the Dadaocheng area for a friend revealed to her the power of illustration to convey her thoughts, and she enjoyed meticulously detailing the scenes. Since then, she has focused primarily on illustration, aiming to emulate the feel of watercolours and crayons in her digital works.

Her creative themes often revolve around everyday landscapes, aiming to connect more people to the land through her artworks. Besides creating, Ning Lo enjoys going out with family and friends or taking solitary walks to clear her mind. For her, “painting is the salt of life,” an essential seasoning in her daily routine.

“Live In Place” is Ning Lo’s recent illustration series, which phonetically resonates with the Taiwanese expression “hó-sóo-tsāi,” meaning a good place. This series explores deep emotional connections with everyday places, drawing inspiration from walks to transform everyday scenes and details into story-rich illustrations. These artworks add a touch of familiarity, featuring a distinctive character, the weasel, who coexists with depicted humans. Ning Lo’s works are a visual delight and evoke resonance and memories among viewers.
