The Ancient Gandhara was a land of treasure and mystery waiting to be unraveled, located presently in between the boundaries of modern northern Pakistan and central Afghanistan. Given its cultural diversity as an exchange center, its art is greatly impacted by Buddhism and the Indo-Greek artistic tradition. Rossi & Rossi proudly presents From the Mountain, a series of sculpted heads from Gandhara alongside a selection of black-and-white photographs of the mountains in Iran by the renowned Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami (1940–2016).
Head of a deity or Bodhisattva Head of an old man, perhaps an ascetic
The variety of sculptured heads were moulded between the fourth and fifth centuries AD. They were created from clay, each showcased uniqueness in its emotions, hairstyle, and facial features. The malleable nature of soft clay caused it to be prone to erosion causing many of the works to be worn out over time. However, the liveliness radiating from the distinctive features and expressions is not dimmed by the thousands of years that passed.

The series of photographs captured by Kiarostami also complements the mystifying air in the gallery room. His wintry landscapes, Snow (2002) act as a form of therapy, succumbing to nature and distancing himself from the urban city life. He carefully and thoughtfully captured his surroundings, activating his camera only three times during his 3000-kilometer journey. “The work of an artist resembles his sentiments, contradictory or not. In fact, either we resemble our work or not at all. Even if I belong to the second category, it is apparent that my photographs are made of the same substance as my dreams”, Kiarostami once said.
