THE MECHANIC WORLD OF SIULOY

In this era of technological advancement and mass production, we rely heavily on machines to live. From the addicting mobile phones to essential electrical appliances we use on a daily basis. Hong Kong artist SiuLoy used different parts of the human body and combined them with technological machines, creating art that represents our current world and what human beings are transforming into.

Technology and machines undeniably play a significant part in our lives. It gradually penetrates our lifestyle which makes us greatly dependent on them. We see the world through machines, it affects how perceptions, cognition, and understanding of the world. Information that we receive from technology, television, social media platforms touches our hearts and generates our emotions. French thinkers Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari regard humans as desiring machines. Regarding this postmodern theory, desiring machines are driven by and connected to other machines creating a link, one integrated flow of production.

SiuLoy explores the realm of technological modification on food and the human body. There is a consistent color scheme of depressing grey throughout his works, with a hint of red. The simplicity of colors stands in stark contrast to the complexity of the paintings’ message. We have arrived at a stage where the chickens that we consumed have been genetically modified with the help of technological advancement; our facial features can also be surgically changed, similar to the building and assembling of a commercially produced doll.
