Being in this generation, we are constantly surrounded by concrete jungle with high-rise buildings. The fast-paced society and the hustle and bustle of city life distance us from our roots of nature. Modern civilisation and nature have become binary oppositions and dichotomous. Korean artist Myonghi Kang sought to reinforce the idea of man and nature being one and to reconstruct our relationship with the natural world through her paintings.
By combining abstraction and figuration in her works, Kang was able to create novel experiences across time, space, and colour for viewers. Her intricate landscapes together with her high command of colours and shapes offer a rare sense of serenity, peace, and tranquility in urban society.
VILLEPIN, a gallery created by collectors for collectors acknowledges and recognises Kang’s artistic pursuit of capturing the beauty of nature in the face of extinction. The gallery represents a meditative sanctuary to complement the artist’s work, providing a hideaway from the exhausting city life。 They want to share her creations with the people of Hong Kong, allowing viewers to douse in her works and discover the world through her eyes.
“Myonghi is a true medicine-woman. Through her infinite display of colours, her paintings contain an embodied spirit that can cure the soul. Art is created through the magic of her brushes, offering a way to preserve the world as well as an oracular challenge,” said Dominique de Villepin, co-founder of VILLEPIN.
