On December 4th, Phillips, in association with Poly Auction, presented ’20th Century & Contemporary Art and Design’ Fall Sales. And through a combination of Day and Night Sale, it brought to the audience an array of important masterpieces from distinguished artists including Yoshitomo Nara, Basquiat, Yayoi Kusama, Zao Wou-Ki, Banksy and so on. The brand new live-streaming format, featuring dynamic camera angles and a virtual event experience, recorded the warm atmosphere at the seasonal sales. As a result, the sales successfully realized a sale of HK$508 Million in total, marking the highest ever total for a Modern and Contemporary Art Auction Series staged by both houses in Hong Kong.
The win-win collaboration between Poly Auction and Phillips achieved unprecedented success, with Yoshitomo Nara’s Hothouse Doll sold for more than HKD 130 million, setting the 2nd highest auction price for the artist. According to Alex Chang, Managing Director of Poly Auction (Hong Kong) Ltd, ‘Yoshitomo Nara’s Hothouse Doll, which appeared as the cover of the artist’s most comprehensive catalogue raisonné, and Untitled, the largest two-dimensional artwork by Nara to appear on the auction market, both achieved impressive results, demonstrating the strong demand and robust market for premium works of art.’.
