Since the opening of Rosewood last year, the harbourfront culture has been further elevated with the launch of K11 MUSEA – A Muse by the Sea.This pioneering cultural-retail destination is a one-of-a-kind space that fosters community and cross-cultural dialogue by bringing together creativity, culture and innovation in a kaleidoscope of inspiration. For its first anniversary, K11 MUSEA unveils an exciting array of new art and cultural happenings starting from 9 October to 8 November 2020. These include the striking nine-metre-tall sculpture Van Gogh’s Ear by Elmgreen & Dragset; a limited-time showcase of legendary pop artist Keith Haring’s iconic artworks presented by Phillips Auction House in the new K11 Art & Cultural Centre.

Reflecting K11 MUSEA’s aim to create a harbourfront culture for the global community, this first anniversary sees the city’s first showcase of Van Gogh’s Earby Elmgreen & Dragset in the skyline of Hong Kong. Best known for investigating social and cultural structures by creating artworks that engage with their surrounding contexts, Danish-Norwegian artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset’s Van Gogh’s Ear is a nine-metre-tall sculpture that takes the form of a swimming pool sitting upright. With its cyan blue interior encompassed by a white edge, and elements like a stainless steel ladder, lights around the inner perimeter, and a diving board, the work reminds the viewer of a real garden pool. Now at K11 MUSEA, Van Gogh’s Ear stands in surreal contrast against Hong Kong’s busy urban landscape.
Similar to the duo’s critically acclaimed 2005 project Prada Marfa—a faux and forever-closed Prada boutique located in the middle of the desert in Texas—Van Gogh’s Ear isolates a familiar object and renders it devoid of function via its displacement, playfully contradicting expectations. The talk-of-the-town since its debut at Rockefeller Center in New York City in 2016, Van Gogh’s Ear at K11 MUSEA is a must-visit destination to snap a magical moment and appreciate art. To mark K11 MUSEA’s 1st Anniversary, the duo has also turned this iconic sculpture into a miniature artefact to mark this city’s first showcase at Hong Kong’s most exciting cultural-retail destination.

與富藝斯打造《Keith Haring: Falling Up》於K11 Art & Cultural Centre 展出| Keith Haring: Falling Uppresented by Phillips Auction House at K11 Art & Cultural Centre

Phillips auction house presentsKeith Haring: Falling Upat K11 MUSEA’s new K11 Art & Cultural Centre in Hong Kong from 9 to 18 October. Discover 6F, the new floor at K11 MUSEA with curation that reflects the city’s harbourfront culture and represents the fluid exchange of ideas in a multicultural, multilingual society like Hong Kong.
To mark K11 MUSEA’s first anniversary, this exciting showcase with Keith Haring: Falling Up presented by Phillips auction house features a broad-ranging selection of works by the legendary pop artist Keith Haring across his all-too-brief career, the showcase encompasses his instantly recognizable paintings, drawings, painted aluminium sculptures, and a grouping of memorabilia that are available for purchase through Phillips’ Private Sales.
One of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century, Keith Haring was a skilled craftsman at an early age and moved to New York in 1978 to attend the School of Visual Arts. While seemingly playful and transparent, Haring dealt with weighty subjects such as death, sex and war, enabling subtle and multiple interpretations. Haring refined a visual language of symbols, which he called icons, the origins of which began with his trademark linear style scrawled in white chalk on the black unused advertising spaces in subway stations. Haring developed and disseminated these icons far and wide, in his vibrant and dynamic style, from public murals and paintings to t-shirts. His art bridged high and low, erasing the distinctions between rarefied art and popular culture.
In conjunction with Keith Haring: Falling Up, Phillips will present a documentary which explores the artist’s life and career, titled Keith Haring: Street Art Boy, at K11 MUSEA’s outdoor immersive venue Sunken Plaza on 10 October at 6:30pm and 8pm Hong Kong time. These programmes offer a look into the oeuvre of an artist who forever transformed the role of street art within the public sphere.

Javier Calleja《沉思男孩》及《小莫瑞吉奧》藝術裝置 | “Get it before it goes”: K11 MUSEA welcomes Javier Calleja’s Thinking Boy and Little Maurizio Installation

Javier Calleja, Thinking Boy, 2019, 205×76.4x90cm, Wood, metal and glass (White eye color)
Javier Calleja is highly sought-after in the art market with a rising presence in art exhibitions around the world and increasing artwork prices. With the launch of the Little Maurizio minifigurines, Calleja presents an enjoyable “art piece” that everyone can bring home.
Known as the cutting-edge destination for fashion insiders, MUSE EDITION at K11 MUSEA showcases a pop-up featuring Javier Calleja’s two sculptures Thinking Boyand Little Maurizioas well as a display of Little Maurizio mini-figurines. Internationally recognised for his wide eye, doll-like characters, Calleja has a distinct aesthetic that is much sought after by collectors.
Like most of his other works, Thinking Boy is somewhat of a self-portrait of the artist, showing a romanticised image of him at work in the studio. The wooden sculpture depicts a boy in a meditation-like pose, balancing books on top of his head with a black cat sitting on top. The totemic composition of the work is accenting the spiritual side of the piece, which represents the artist in search of inspiration. Such inspiration, which sometimes comes from works by other accomplished artists is the subject of the second piece in the presentation – Little Maurizio.
With Little Maurizio,Calleja pays tribute to Maurizio Cattelan, an artist he admires and whose works are loaded with ingenuity and a keen sense of humour. Calleja was inspired to recreate his particular playful, affective and innocent universe, while making it ironic and surrealist at the same time, representing a final effort to humanise the world around him.

First Hong Kong Screening of Cheng Ran’s ‘Always I Distrust’: Exploring the emotional isolation of city dwellers with acclaimed actress Carina Lau

Always I Distrust, 2020, Director: Cheng Ran; Starring: Carina Lau; Chief Producer: Adrian Cheng; Presenter: K11 Art Foundation
K11 MUSEA, conceived as A Muse by the Sea, follows the notion that the muse is limitless, and comes from any form of literature, music or art but can also be found in any corner of the universe. The heart of the muse – the Gold Ball is a multi-dimensional space that will see Hong Kong’s first screening of Cheng Ran’s short filmAlways I Distrust, starring his muse and acclaimed actress Carina Lau and produced by Adrian Cheng. This will be the first showing of the film in Hong Kong after which it will travel to Shanghai.
Conceived as a sequel to Cheng Ran’s work Always I Trust in 2014, which was inspired by a computer-generated spam email sent to the artist by an unknown woman, Cheng Rancontinues to explore the subject of emotional isolation experienced by city dwellers. Contrary to the previous piece, the new work is taken from the perspective of an abandoned hacked email account that auto-generates unintelligible messages to hundreds of recipients, creating a random list that reverberates in the virtual city network.
Always I Distrust constructs a fantasy world in a fictional setting, a space for listening and meditation, immersing the viewers in an abstract yet magnificently tactile and interactive timespace as they traverse liquid spaces and interconnected portals in a nine-minute experience.
