Sketching is a drawing method and is similar to improvisation in the performing arts. A painter needs to grasp the key feature of the subject within a short time and renders it in a simplified manner.
“Instant Reflection: Hong Kong Artists and Sketches”, an exhibition jointly organised by Sun Museum and Xiang Gang Mei Xie in collaboration with Hong Kong Art, will be held from 12 June to 22 August 2020 at Sun Museum. The exhibition features around 120 sketches by 40 Hong Kong artists, including Tien Chi, Wong Chau Tung, Lam Tian Xing, Hau Siu Ching, Wai King Man, Yick Hang, Chen Keng and Zhao Zhijun.
Some of the pieces in the exhibition feature authentic landscapes of Hong Kong. For example, a series of sketches titled “Glamorous Hong Kong” by Wong Chau Tung depicts bustling streets and skyscrapers in Hong Kong with ink wash, recreating the urban buzz of this international city. Another sketch series, “Scenery of Hong Kong” by Tien Chi, is paired with poems by Huang Binhong. It depicts Hong Kong’s natural landscapes as seen by the painter on trips around Hong Kong, employing dry strokes and heavy ink. “Fishing Village in Tai O” and “Drifting” by Wai King Man capture the essence of Tai O through the stilt houses and fishing boats rendered with fountain pen.
Other works in the exhibition reflect community life in Hong Kong. People wearing masks are the subject in Lam Shiu Chi’s “Temperature Check”, Hau Siu Ching’s “Figure in Motion”, and Yick Hang’s “Waiting for the Green Traffic Light Signal”. They all record the life of Hong Kong people during the coronavirus pandemic, whether taking temperature check before entering a shop or restaurant, returning to Hong Kong from overseas, or waiting to cross a busy road.
To align with the Hong Kong Government’s latest measures to achieve social distancing due to the coronavirus outbreak, the Museum will be closed to the public until 4 August 2020 (Tuesday). The exhibition “Instant Reflection: Hong Kong Artist and Sketches” will be extended until 29 August (Saturday).
